As part of the?America the Beautiful?initiative, the Biden-Harris?administration has launched?Conservation.gov, a new website that helps?connect people with information, tools, resources, and opportunities to support land and water conservation projects in communities across the country.?The website is a public information hub for staying updated on conservation efforts across the country, finding places to recreate outdoors or to volunteer on public lands, and applying for financial assistance in support of conservation projects.?With more than 41 million acres already conserved, President Biden is on track to conserve more lands and waters than any president in history. Following the catastrophic 2019-20 bushfires, habitat that survived intact has become an increasingly vital refuge for biodiversity, particularly threatened species. Conservation on private land not only helps threatened species and ecosystems recover from bushfires, it delivers nature-based solutions to help mitigate climate change in the first instance.
Max Dingle's conservation agreement property near Sussex Inlet, on the NSW South Coast, was spared the worst of bushfires that scarred the region in 2019 and 2020. As senior ecologist James Lindsey explains, the property provided a valuable refuge for many species trying to escape the catastrophic fires. #bushfires?#blacksummer?#privatelandconservation #conservation

This is a great success story not only from the perspective of #InvasiveSpecies removal and #EcosystemRestoration but also from a cultural standpoint with the indigenous Aleut people being able to reclaim the original name of #Hawadax Island. It is an illustration of how conservation action and quality partnerships between Island Conservation, its partners the local community can bring about powerful crosscutting outcomes including, in this case, enhanced #biodiversity with the return of nesting seabirds (some of which had not been seen on site for almost 200 years) and strengthened cultural identity for the local indigenous community. #SustainableDevelopment #IslandConservation
In 2012, following the successful removal of invasive rats in 2008, Native Aleut people successfully petitioned for the renaming of Rat Island back to the original name, Hawadax Island. Thanks to the work of Island Conservation, conservation partners, and the local community, the island is now known as a nesting ground for a wide variety of seabirds, including the Tufted Puffin—which had previously not been seen there for almost 200 years. The Center for American Progress has released a new column: The Biden Administration Has Reached Conservation Records in 2023. This paper takes stock of the first three years of the Biden administration’s work toward conserving America’s public lands and finds that the Biden administration has conserved over 24 million acres of public lands and has funneled over $18 billion to federal, state, local, and Tribal conservation efforts. This year alone, the Biden administration conserved over 12.5 million acres and channeled $7.5 billion toward conservation programs across the country. Since the Biden administration took office, it has worked to meet community needs through new protections and funding for conservation. But the work is not done; this paper also emphasizes that President Biden must turn towards executive action to bring in big conservation wins in 2024.
