It has been so energising and inspiring working with MyRacehorse to build out their equine welfare and post-racing commitment. They really understand the challenges and complexities of a comprehensive post-racing offering and have met them head on. One of the biggest post-racing challenges is what happens when a horse retires from racing due to an injury that rules out a ridden second career. This can feel taboo but it is a risk for all elite athletes and if we accept (as I do) that horses can be athletes and take part in equestrian or racing pursuits then this is a risk we accept and it is what we do in these circumstances that counts. This video is the first of many examples of the MyRacehorse commitment in action. All of our horses require something a little different at transition but the following key principles are consistent: Transparency - ensure his new owner understands his physical abilities/limitations; Holistic Welfare - to ensure his new home meets his physical and behavioural welfare needs; Responsbility - to ensure clarity on who is responsible for his ongoing care and welfare. Ongoing Support - to ensure his new owner feels supported by MyRacehorse through the transition and beyond; Traceability - to ensure MyRacehorse can account for his whereabouts for the rest of his life; Safety Net - to ensure we have a well communicated safety net for if his circumstances change. The Horse Super Fund is the foundation of this commitment as it takes the $ out of the decision making, leaving us to focus on the horse. Since launching in June, we have been quietly working away on our ambitious project to permanently change the landscape for greyhounds in Australia. Today we take an important step towards that goal. Blue the Grey, Australia's newest greyhound protection charity, has just been named a 2024 Voiceless, the animal protection institute Grant Recipient! Our partnership with Voiceless will enable us to progress with an exciting new research project to better understand how we can “move the needle” to end dog racing in Australia. You see, despite widespread opposition to greyhound racing, we face powerful industry forces and political obstacles that have kept the ‘status quo’ in place. Australia remains the global stronghold for greyhound racing despite continued exposes, inquiries, and promises of reform. We intend to change that. 'Team Blue' is putting our hearts and minds to work to develop compelling narratives to bring more people into the greyhound protection movement. In a nutshell? We're going to give greyhounds the powerful representation they deserve — ensuring their voices not only echo across the nation, but spark change in every corner. Thanks to Voiceless’ support, we can undertake this project that is an essential part of our long-term strategy to end greyhound racing.
