At the Alice at Goodman Theatre, a two-sided wood feature wall meanders through the space, defining the threshold between public and learning spaces. ? ? Alluding to the appearance of a Venetian contour curtain being folded to reveal a performance stage, the 'wood curtain' gracefully breaks or 'parts' to delineate entry points into the various classrooms. ? Composed of clean striped rift-cut red oak and backed with grey acoustical fabric, the vertical wood slats vary in width and depth, effectively dissipating and absorbing sound within STEM learning labs and reception spaces. In addition to its acoustic properties, the feature wall introduces students to different materials as a creative framework for theatrical performance. ? ? Public art often misses the mark in urban spaces. Often one randomly encounters a piece of art that feels utterly out of place. This isn't just an isolated incident; it's a widespread issue in urban planning. The core of the problem? A glaring disconnect between the art, the space, and the community it resides in. Art in urban spaces often fails because it's designed in isolation. Architects and urban planners meticulously craft the fabric of our cities, yet when it comes to integrating public art, the process is frequently an afterthought. The result? Artworks that clash with their surroundings, failing to resonate with the public or enhance the urban landscape. Moreover, the essence of public art gets lost when it doesn't engage the community. True, impactful art stems from understanding the cultural, historical, and social context of its location. Without this connection, art becomes a mere object, not an experience. It's time to rethink our approach to public art and move towards a collaborative model where artists, architects, and the community co-create, ensuring that art enriches the urban experience, not detracts from it. Engagement is key. Share your experiences with public art that truly enhanced its environment? . Let's start a conversation on how we can bridge the gap between art and architecture in our urban spaces.

Reading objects | Filling the gaps Works of art, architecture and design that are deemed to be 'canonical': Ralph Lauren's patchwork garments due to their influence are displayed in prominent museum collections (Weiser, 2018). While the western arthistorical canon has come under severe critique since the latter part of the 20th century, particularly with regard to its biased treatment of class, race, and gender, it can also be considered as a crucial starting point and foundation for learning about and discussing art Young artists, designers and architects can offer new approaches to art, design and architecture. Often their work is relevant to the current social and economic climate. From this perspective, art design and architecture are critical, technical or aesthetic enquiries, which seek to respond to existing political, social and contemporary contexts and realities. Museums need to present the practice of representation as progressive, valuable and educating whilst remaining engaging and relevant (Sitzia, 2018). According to Debord (2009), museums play an important role in education, social cohesion and sustainable development and have great potential to raise public awareness of the value of cultural and natural heritage and of the responsibility of all citizens to contribute to their care and transmission. Museums and galleries reflect these values through the shows they choose to display, and thus highlight what their priorities are. The project focuses on the changing roles of cultural institutions such as museums and gallery spaces as traditional mediators of culture and the arts (Van Dienderen et al., 2007; Vlieghe et al., 2016). The traditional functions of cultural institutions are questioned and institutions increasingly problematize “the civilizing mission of the arts” (Belfiore & Bennett, 2008, p. 31). For example, museums are critically assessing their relation to national culture and identity or are grappling with their postcolonial heritage (Weiser, 2018; Gielen, 2013; Vanhee 2016). Other institutions need to reinvent their traditional functions and rethink their roles in an increasingly media saturated society. M?ntmann (2009, p. 155) talks about new institutionalism as the creation of an “active space that is part community center, part laboratory, and part academy”.

Psychreative (FREE event): Prof. Lorna McNeur on “Mannahatta: Depth Psychology and Urbanism” February 27, 2024 Zoom Free tickets 7:00pm London Mannahatta, the once beautiful and sacred ceremonial island to the Manhattan Lenape Tribe, has become a totally gridded urban metropolis, with painfully little green space, except at the centre of the island. Manhattan sits at the heart & centre of New York City. Central Park sits at the heart & centre of Manhattan. The now buried reservoir, sits at the heart & centre of Central Park. This 12 minute video proposes a reinstatement of this reservoir, into which would be placed a memorial sacred ceremonial island of Mannahatta. The story of this island, is the story of the planet; sacred earthly beauty ignored, trodden, and gridded, used and abused as products for monetary gain. Lorna McNeur is an academic, architect, and artist, who is currently Chair of the Cambridge Jungian Circle and is a Retired Cambridge University Lecturer in Architecture. She has published, lectured, and exhibited her work internationally, most notably at the Whitney Museum NYC, and The Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge UK. She taught architecture (philosophy/design/phenomenology) for thirty years in New York, Canada, and Cambridge UK. Ceramic Sculpture and video making are two of her current passions. Color Commentary "Jawn": Unveiling Cultural Competency's Role in Spatial Understanding Color Commentary is a series that elevates the inspiring stories of people who have overcome adversity, showcasing their resilience, determination, and cultural values. They inspire hope and demonstrate that challenges can be conquered. This exhibit starts by looking at the role cultural humility plays in our ability to understand and navigate spaces around us. This exhibit, titled Color Commentary "Jawn": Unveiling Cultural Humility's Role in Spatial Understanding, embarks on a journey to explore the multifaceted meanings behind a seemingly simple slang term originating from Philadelphia: 'jawn.' Beyond its linguistic roots, 'jawn' serves as an allegory that vividly demonstrates how cultural Humility can lead to various degrees of understanding - be it positive, negative, or none at all - in relation to the spaces that shape our lives. This exhibition delves into the dynamic interplay between cultural humility and spatial investigations using "the block" to organize the discussion. This space, like a preverbal ice cube tray, intricately mirrors the intervals between houses and curb cuts. While seemingly relentless, a closer reading illustrates the narratives of residents as they transform inherited spaces into unique expressions of self. Each 'jawn' acts as a vivid prism, shedding light on the multifaceted stories within culturally significant terrains. #wedgegallery #design #architecture #heros #queens #love #loveletter

Architectural Reflections: Hollein's Monumental Transformations Hans Hollein's "Transformations" series encapsulates a unique design approach, reminiscent of his iconic "Monument to Victims of the Holocaust" collage. In this series, barren landscapes serve as canvases for monumental industrial objects, evoking an enigmatic and ominous architectural space. The scaling-up of a train carriage, placed on a monumental pedestal, transforms it into a haunting symbol of remembrance. This concept echoes the monumental scale seen in the Zeppelin Fields in Nuremberg, where the destruction of the swastika serves as a poignant movie reel of the demise of Nazi ideology. The detonation of the massive swastika symbolizes the end of a dark chapter in history, resonating with today's political unrest and ideological struggles, particularly within Israel. The juxtaposition of architectural styles and political ideologies underscores the complexity of contemporary landscapes. Hollein's "Aircraft Carrier City in Landscape" further challenges conventional understandings of architecture by placing towering images of military vessels in rural settings, blurring the lines between past and present, war and peace. In today's tumultuous political climate, where tensions run high and ideological conflicts persist, Hollein's collages serve as poignant reminders of the power of architecture to evoke emotions, challenge perceptions, and provoke reflection on the human condition. #ArchitecturalReflections?#HolleinsMonuments?#TransformativeDesign?#HolocaustMemorial?#ContemporaryLandscape?#ArchitecturalCommentary?#PoliticalUnrest?#IdealogicalArchitecture

Cultural Community Art Center: A Developmental Initiative The Cultural Community Art Center is envisioned as a cornerstone for tourism and education, aiming to fortify and weave together local communities via socially inclusive spaces. These spaces will serve as vibrant hubs for events, fostering connections, and celebrating the rich tapestry of cultural diversity. The architectural design is a homage to each unique community culture, striving not only to highlight and educate but to rejoice in and disseminate the distinctive communal heritage. It's a project that reveres historical significance, leveraging our collective past as a lens through which we can enrich our future. Design Concept: The DNA of Community At the heart of the concept is DNA, symbolising the intrinsic socio-cultural fabric that defines the community. The interlocking DNA pattern reflects the close bonds of families, friends, and neighbours, whose lives are interwoven into a cohesive society. While their cultural backgrounds may vary, their shared values and appreciation for one another culminate in a blended community, unified in diversity. The intertwined DNA motif underlines the collective harmony among various cultural inhabitants. Architectural Design: Harmony with Nature To mitigate coastal issues like salinity and erosion, the design incorporates a FORM ACTIVE structural system, renowned for load distribution via shape. This system manifests itself in three forms: the cable, arch, and tent systems. The DNA configuration is an intricate blend of these structural systems, yielding a design that allows expansive, self-supporting spaces and optimal natural lighting. Sustainability is a cornerstone of the building's design, with minimal energy consumption and the generation of electricity via photovoltaic cells installed on the tent roofs. This was my academic project from the second year, where we were instructed to create an intervention in any part of the university. The key aspect of the design was that it should encourage physical movement and engagement with the body. Post (1 of 3) This space holds small pockets of transitional spaces in it. The concept behind this is very clear which is carried on from the previous exercises. There is a continuous experience changing in the space. The movements of body have made me designed such space which is unique from the previous designs because the stimulate effect causes these movements, and in turn have made this space come into being. . . . . . . . #AcademicProject #ArchitectureDesign #UniversityIntervention #PhysicalMovement #BodyEngagement #DesignForMovement #InnovativeDesign #SecondYearProject #SpatialDesign #ArchitectureStudents #CreativeIntervention #DesignForWellbeing #InteractiveDesign
