This was a phenomenal article in the 2024 Spring Issue of the Nonprofit Quarterly by one of our Maryland Humanities Board Members Dr. Shauna D. A. Knox that speaks to the difficulties Black women in leadership face. It is so common that many of us feel invisible in crowded rooms, and unseen even while people speak of wanting to engage with us. I know for myself, I struggle with how to present my full self at work. I often worry I may not be seen as professional. Every day I ask myself, how should I wear my hair? What colors are professional and non-threatening? Is my tone of voice “aggressive”? Am I asserting enough leadership and guidance? Am I being too deferential? Should I be more deferential? When listening, do I look angry? So many of us are constantly asking a million questions of ourselves that are intimately attached to being Black and a woman at work. Dr. Knox writes, “Many Black women in positions of leadership earnestly believe that they cannot afford the luxury of a more integral moral ecology because they are being made to choose between their livelihoods and their ideals. Many also feel that rather than an act of self-betrayal, it is an act of resigned fatalism - one that simply acknowledges that the fate of Black women will never change, and thus self-sacrifice is as meaningless as it is costly and therefore not worth the bargains.” Click on the link below to read more about the sacrifices and experiences of Black women in Leadership!

When the algorithm places posts on my feed, I try to react honestly without regard for hurting anyones feelings. I am being targeted with content, so I am being prodded to react. I am a social justice warrior at the core. I don't give a damn what religious lable anyone wishes to wear or more realistically had it branded on them as children and are doing their best to leverage that lable into doing something worthwhile for the world, their neighbors, or themselves. It is good to see people doing good work. We need social groups like these in every town. America would be a significantly kinder, friendlier, and safer place to live. However, it is extremely difficult to comprehend local social justice when globally we as American's (both Jews and Christians) are being programmed to support mass murder and the total destruction of life and property of people overseas that we cannot see or hear or help in any real way. It matters immensely how one answers this question. Is it only regional or local social justice we care about or does that notion apply to all people, everywhere? The lables Christian and Jew have been destroyed and redefined by those who lust for power and wealth. They have manipulated of our media and our government at every level to such an extent that we now have churches and temples cheering for mass murder labeled as self defense. White Nationals are not Christian and Zionists are not Jews. Anyone joining any social justice organization should be clear about the definitions going in because even Hitler and the Nazi's had millions of innocent families engaged in what they believed were social justice groups that were entirely for the benefit of the German people.

This fall, I joined the board of Jews United for Justice, a fantastic membership organization of Maryland and DC Jewish folks and allies to work for economic, racial, and social justice in our region. I've been a fan of Jacob Feinspan and his team are doing to support workers and communities of color across DC and Maryland, and I'm really honored to get to help this team. Every year, JUFJ gathers our communities for a single night to celebrate our wins, honor some of our leaders and partners, and see old and new friends. This year, for the first time ever, this celebration, the Heschel Vision Awards, is taking place in Baltimore. It’s an opportunity to learn more about JUFJ and to support an organization that’s making a real difference in people’s lives and have a lovely evening with passionate and compassionate people. It’s Sunday, December 8. I hope you’ll join me. Please check out https://lnkd.in/ehcD5UqT to reserve your spot and support this fantastic organization -- and reach out if you want to talk more about JUFJ!

Veteran Housing Corp reminds you that #HOMELESSNESS IS THE RESULT OF DECADES OF THE FAILURE TO BUILD AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR ALL. THE HISTORY AND PRESENT STATE OF THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX IN AMERICA CAN BE SUMMED UP IN ONE WORD: BROKEN DON'T BE FOOLED BY SLICK PROMOTIONAL POSTS THAT MAKE IT SEEM LIKE YOUR LOCAL, STATE OR FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS ARE SOLVING THE AFFORDABLE HOUSING CRISIS. WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, THE PUBLIC AND TAXPAYERS MUST ASK: AT WHAT COST TO THE TAXPAYERS AND HOW LONG IS THE AFFORDABILITY PERIOD? EVERY TAXPAYER SHOULD BE ASKING THEIR ELECTED AND APPOINTED OFFICIALS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: 1. How much local, state, and federal funding, tax credits, density bonus increase, waivers of impact fees, or other government benefit or incentive did the project receive? 2. What is the affordability period for each project and, if the affordability period is not in perpetuity or permanent, WHY NOT? 3. What guarantees exist that tenants in the affordable housing units will not be displaced after an "affordability period expires? Any LOCAL, STATE or FEDERAL official that does not MANDATE "permanent" affordability periods or affordability "IN PERPETUITY" for any project receiving some government benefit is commiting MALFEASANCE and should quit, be removed from office or be terminated. IN MOST CASES WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING, the public and taxpayer are being fooled into thinking their elected and appointed officials are solving problems, when in fact, all hey have done is "KICK THE CAN DOWN THE ROAD" to burden a future generation with the same problem or crisis!

For the second time in American history, a president has retaken the White House nonconsecutively. Only one other president served nonconsecutively and that was Grover Cleveland, as the 22nd and 24th president. Today, on Inauguration Day, read more in this article written by Dr. Roger Chapman, PBA Professor of History, about the historical parallels between these two US presidents: https://lnkd.in/eKJfEESY

Historic preservation bridges the gap between space and time, allowing us to stand where history was made and feel its lingering presence. Washington-Rosenwald Schools are more than just structures; they are monuments to Booker T. Washington’s transformative vision and Julius Rosenwald’s belief in the power of education to uplift Black communities in the face of systemic inequality. Walking into that fragile schoolhouse, hearing the creak of the floorboards, and seeing sunlight filter through broken windows—those sensations are reminders of the resilience, determination, and hope that defined the children and educators who once filled that space. At the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund, we are driven by this very purpose: to ensure that such places of profound significance are not lost to decay but are preserved as touchstones of our collective history.

Williamsburg City Council has unanimously approved the narrative for the African American Heritage Trail (AAHT), a project that holds deep meaning for the city and its communities.
