Great feature on Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington's partnership with the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division Tech Transfer office! "In addition to learning how to license federally developed patented technology, the program helps participants learn the process of collaborating with a federal lab’s scientists and engineers. Since its launch, about 40 individuals have signed up for or completed the course" https://lnkd.in/gSpdmuGq Steve Bryant, MBA

In a move to accelerate the commercialization of early-stage technologies critical to U.S. national and economic security, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) selected SRI as its Silicon Valley-based Commercial Accelerator. SRI is teaming with the Naval Postgraduate School Foundation & Alumni Association and NewLab to create a comprehensive commercial accelerator team, harnessing the expertise of the three organizations to guide #DARPA performers on their journey to market, speed up #techtransition and scale DARPA-funded technologies. "Driving the adoption of new technologies is how we win. The current global security landscape demands that we accelerate the pace of innovation and deliver defense and security solutions that give our service members a competitive edge. The NPS Foundation in partnership with SRI and our unique network of defense and industry experts, is driving the adoption of capabilities under DARPA’s Commercial Accelerator Program. Together we can bring next generation capabilities to the warfighter today." - Todd Lyons, Vice President, NPS Foundation ???: https://lnkd.in/eDeSSGJV #emergingtech #dualusetech #innovation #economicsecurity #nationalsecurity #partnerships

Entrepreneurial lessons from the 70s! In my readings today, I came across a DARPA principle that rings true for entrepreneurs and innovators today. It is called "The Heilmeier Catechism" and was first conceived by George H. Heilmeier, Director of DARPA from 1975-1977. It was designed initially to help DARPA researchers think through the merits of their programs, but today seems like the perfect reflection for entrepreneurs to take while evaluating their entrepreneurial endeavors: 1. What are you trying to do? Articulate your objectives using absolutely no jargon. 2. How is it done today, and what are the limits of current practice? 3. What is new in your approach, and why do you think it will be successful? 4. Who cares? If you are successful, what difference will it make? 5. What are the risks? 6. How much will it cost? 7. How long will it take? 8. What are the mid-term and final “exams” to check for success? I feel like this is an incredibly timeless yet retro way for startups to think. Thoughts? https://lnkd.in/e5aD7sfT

Worth taking a look if security is your thing.
As the RAPIDFORT team prepares for the AFA Conference, we’ve been reflecting on our invaluable partnerships with the United States Department of Defense (DoD). Contrary to popular belief, the DoD is a leader in innovation, driving advancements through initiatives like SpaceWERX, AFWERX, and the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU). Our latest blog post delves into how these programs are pioneering new technologies and why supporting the critical work being done to safeguard our nation is essential. National Defense Magazine ran my article two years ago about how Defense leadership misunderstands innovation. Innovation is not a command, it commands military operations and affairs. Since then, we've seen drones make tanks obsolete on the battlefield and AI assert itself irrevocably in all phases of conflict. https://lnkd.in/eq3bH72a #innovation #defense #ai #drones #data #army #tbt

Professional disagreement is essential to successful innovation. We have to be able to thoughtfully engage without anger, and without resorting to reactive binaries (me vs. you, I'm 100% right, you are 100% wrong). In a hostile and binary environment, the innovators feel pressured to dig in and then become dangerously reluctant to address reasonable questions about their designs. And in their sometimes frothing anger, critics of an innovation too often fail to proffer digestible critiques or defensible alternatives. U.S. Marine Corps Force Design 2030 (now just Force Design, or FD) is a case in point for innovation debate gone wrong. FD is one of the most remarkable efforts at institutional innovation in the past decade. As envisioned, it is a prospectively radical shift in the way a service of about 200,000 people will reorganize for near-future wars. Force Design was adopted quickly and it generated immediate and aggressive pushback across the community of former and retired Marines. What could have been a useful debate over the merits of this massive innovative change collapsed into public chaos. Both sides dug in their heels and effectively pummeled each other, sometimes with politely gritted teeth and sometimes with outright venom. We can do better. If we are going to salvage a useful Marine Corps for the 21st Century - a very real concern - we need to find a way to professionally disagree with one another while remaining committed to our shared purpose: sustaining and, when necessary, modifying a relevant and winning institution. For anyone feeling particularly emotional about the Marine Corps' Force Design 2030, this podcast by Walker D. Mills is a great starting point for resetting. This is clearly the one-sided proponents' view. I learned a great deal from the six contributors (Travis Reese Travis Hord Evan Zach Ota Ian Brown Leo Spaeder Brian Strom). They were thoughtful and professional. While I do not oppose all of FD outright, I questioned much of what I heard in this podcast. I spotted some yawning gaps in logical argumentation that need to be further explored. While Travis, Travis, et al. reinforced my belief that there are great Marines committed to making FD work, they did not convince me that FD will work, or that it is the best innovation for near-future war. I was enlightened on some specifics, but my mind was not fundamentally changed at the end of the podcast. That's all okay. We can listen thoughtfully to one another, disagree, and continue a professional and productive conversation over time. I hope that Walker also is amenable to running a podcast with some opponents of FD, and that those who might participate would do so in an equally professional and productive manner. #marinecorps #fd2030 #innovation #military Matthew Jones Thomas Hammes Frank Hoffman Theo Farrell Jeannie Johnson Todd Lyons https://lnkd.in/g79B2qqN
