I love this picture. It represents something far deeper than just a moment in time—it symbolizes the grit, courage, and dedication of today’s generation of service members. There’s a common narrative floating around that Gen Z doesn't like to work, are hard to manage, or lack the discipline of previous generations. I strongly disagree. The truth is, they simply have different motivations and values. Like any generation, they adapt to the world they’ve grown up in, and their priorities reflect that. But make no mistake: they are just as patriotic, brave, and willing to serve. Take, for example, the pilot in this image. She made history by becoming the first American woman to achieve an air-to-air kill, taking down a hostile drone. Her achievement is a testament to the skill, determination, and resolve of this new generation of warfighters. Gen Z’s contributions to the safety and security of our nation are undeniable, and they continue to prove their critics wrong through actions like this. Their courage, paired with a strong sense of purpose, shows that they are not only ready to serve but to lead in new and innovative ways. As we look toward the future, it’s clear that this generation is equipped to carry the torch forward, and moments like these demonstrate that our nation's defense is in capable, committed hands. Major Richard "Dick" Winters, US Army, served during World War II and is best known for his leadership of Easy Company, part of the 101st Airborne and depicted in the show "Band of Brothers." Winters led men through one of the war’s most critical battles, including the D-Day invasion, Operation Market Garden, and the Battle of the Bulge. His leadership style is remembered as one of humility, courage, and a relentless commitment to the well-being of his soldiers. During the Brecourt Manor Assault, with only a few men, he successfully disabled a battery of German artillery which threatened the Allied landing on Utah Beach. For his actions that day, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. After the war, Winters initially struggled to adjust to civilian life. He took various jobs in corporate America, one at a plastics adhesive company and another selling animal food products. After a few years, despite financial prosperity, Winters was unfulfilled, depressed, and apathetic toward his career. As years passed, the story of Winters' service and that of Easy Company rose to great popularity. Winters' leadership became a thing of Army teachings and many highly lucrative opportunities started to come his way - public speaking and corporate board seats. Despite what was likely a very high earning potential, Winters had learned about himself and about what was most important to him. He purchased a modest farm in Hershey, Pennsylvania, left the spotlight and lived out the rest of his life farming, raising cows, and working with horses. Punch Line: Money matters, but so does doing work that's an expression of who we are. Doing work that is significant. Not every path works for every Veteran; regardless of how much it pays. Have the courage to pursue the path that works for you.
