Our newest cohort has returned from Washington, D.C., where U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) convened all incoming LEEP cohorts for a collaborative kickoff event. During this trip, the six West Gate innovators met with their peers from Chain Reaction Innovations, Cyclotron Road, and Innovation Crossroads, fostering connections and sharing insights across a diverse range of #CleanEnergy technologies. In addition to building valuable relationships within the LEEP community, they had the chance to engage directly with DOE leaders and policymakers, gaining deeper insight into how their work aligns with national energy priorities and initiatives. ?? https://lnkd.in/g7Chvgpw

This week U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Industrial Efficiency and Decarbonization Office (IEDO) hosted a workshop seeking input on the pathways to decarbonizing industries. ??A key fact framing the workshop was that 60% of emissions reduction needed to achieve net-zero in heavy industries by 2050 will come from technologies that don’t yet exist or are in the development pipeline. ?? IEDO announced the launch of a new vision study looking at the barriers, pathways, frameworks and sector-specific solutions to scaling decarbonization in the industrial sector, building on DOE’s industrial decarbonization roadmap and commercial liftoff reports. It was wonderful to join colleagues from across industry, academia, and civil society (including our friends at Great Plains Institute) at the workshop to discuss challenges and solutions that will feed into the study. Those who weren’t there can still engage by responding to a Request for Information to inform the study (deadline June 10th). https://lnkd.in/eU9wRvUy I’m looking forward to continued engagement and the findings of this study that has the potential to frame U.S. industrial decarbonization priorities for the next few decades. I am pleased to share our article, Multi-Stage Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis for Siting Electric Vehicle Charging Stations within and across Border Regions, which has been published in Energies journal. In this piece, using the principles from my research on locational value of energy storage, we present the method of ascertaining the best locations for deploying Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations with respect to Northern Ireland locational characteristics through an industry project covering EU east border regions including Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, and Scotland (FASTER Project: https://lnkd.in/e47Jegvw). The research involves collaboration with local councils, industry partners, and the Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) Networks – the network operator. We showed when more does and doesn’t mean better with EV charging stations. FASTER Project has completed the physical roll-out and installation of 75 Rapid EV charging stations in the programme area. The Project is to ensure that the availability of public charging stations is not a major obstacle to EV market penetration. A huge thank you to the FASTER Project partners (Ulster University, Louth County Council, Dundalk Institute of Technology, HITRANS, South West College, and University of Strathclyde) led by the East Border Region Ltd; Northern Ireland local councils; NIE Networks; and co-authors, Neil Hewitt, Paul MacArtain, and Bukola Oni, Ph.D., for their invaluable insights and collaboration towards delivering the project and this work. Many thanks to Michael O. Kolawole of Australia for angel support for over 10 years. The methods and the lessons learnt are presented here: https://lnkd.in/eV3bgMuR. Happy to see the work used and cited in journals that I respect and admire ??

Is the practice of science communication a monolith? In the recent SciPep report, which is a culmination of 5 years of research, we dive into what might be unique when communicating basic science. I think this effort has allowed us to refine our questions as we continue to explore what needs to happen in order to connect basic science within and between diverse audiences.
Public engagement expert and Director of RockEDU Science Outreach, Jeanne Garbarino, reflects on the new perspectives revealed by the SciPEP effort. Check out the insights and practice advice in the report. https://lnkd.in/gWEf_qKZ? #SciComm #SciEngage?U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)
