A Recent Update from Us: In a major milestone, we have joined an elite consortium of industry experts and academic institutions, dedicated to pioneering breakthrough technologies for lunar construction and operations. This collaboration directly supports the NASA Artemis program by advancing the development of lunar surface landing and launch pads (LLPs). On the Moon's airless surface, rocket launches can generate high-velocity ejecta, dispersing dust, sand, gravel, and rocks that could damage nearby assets, including spacecraft. LLPs are essential for mitigating these risks and providing a solid foundation for safe landings and launches. This project is vital for defining and developing the technologies needed for LLPs, including power systems, shelters, regolith (lunar soil) excavation and processing, brick fabrication, and autonomous robotics. We’re proud to be part of the Astroport Space Technologies consortium, selected by NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration for a Phase 2 STTR award to refine the concept of operations (CONOPS) and system architecture for LLP site preparation and construction. In a groundbreaking collaboration, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and The Ohio State University are pioneering laser beam welding for in-space manufacturing, an essential technology for future Moon and Mars missions. This multi-year effort aims to understand welding processes in reduced gravity and vacuum environments, potentially enabling astronauts to construct or repair large structures on the lunar surface. The research includes high-powered laser welding tests aboard parabolic flights, simulating low Earth orbit and lunar gravity conditions, and is already yielding critical data on temperature effects, heat transfer, and weld performance. This project, spanning over two years and funded by NASA’s various directorates, involves a dynamic team of students, scientists, and engineers from multiple NASA centers and Ohio State. Successfully completing 69 out of 70 welds during weightless conditions, the team is laying the foundation for robust in-space manufacturing. The insights gained could revolutionize space infrastructure, reducing the need to transport heavy materials and enabling the construction of large habitats and spacecraft. The data could also advance Earth-based industries, enhancing welding processes vital for a range of products from cars to skyscrapers. Imagine the most heavily instrumented command & control mobile launch tower packed with redundant and fail safe systems for more than 30 subsystems of NASA's SLS rocket as well as ground interfaces to the Orion capsule and the Upper Stage (ICPS) while at the VAB or at the Pad. It also provides all the mechanisms necessary to perform engine replacement work and various other LRU replacements, if needed, at the VAB or Pad 39B. A lot of forethought admired by both Blue Origin and SpaceX but as you can imagine a bit too expensive from a commercial project's perspective. Grant it, if a more minimalistic approach was taken maybe we could have ended with less than 1/2 million physical measurements being telemetered at various data rates to the ground (LCC or Mission Control) for both Artemis Orion Capsule and SLS subsystems. So, ultimately SLS and Orion instrumentation archived data will continue to feed future launch vehicle or spacecraft designs from the measurements obtained during the launch event alone. All of this is thanks to the KSC launch infrastructure that has as a key interface: the Mobile Launcher, a facility interface that provides the above plus redundant/resilient/backup power and communications, lightning protection and lighting induced transient monitoring subsystems, fuel and oxidizer feeds, and various other gases; and much more including transportation of the assembled rocket to the pad.

BP America has entered a Space Act Agreement with Nasa to enhance technological advancements in both energy production and space exploration. Under the collaboration, bp and Nasa will leverage digital technologies and decades of technical expertise from operating in extreme environments. The Space Act Agreement, under the National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958, allows the two entities to share digital models, simulations and technical know-how. This collaboration aims to improve the visualisation of equipment in challenging locations, whether deep underwater or distant planets. BP anticipates that this agreement will advance both energy production on Earth and human space exploration of the Moon and Mars.

NASA has taken a big step forward in how engineers will assemble and stack future SLS (Space Launch System) rockets for Artemis Moon missions inside the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The VAB’s High Bay 2 has been outfitted with new tooling to facilitate the vertical integration of the SLS core stage. That progress was on full display in mid-December when teams suspended the fully assembled core stage 225 feet in the air inside the high bay to complete vertical work before it is stacked on mobile launcher 1, allowing teams to continue solid rocket booster stacking simultaneously inside High Bay 3 for Artemis II. With the move to High Bay 2, technicians with NASA and Boeing now have 360-degree tip to tail access to the core stage, both internally and externally. Michigan-based supplier Futuramic Tool and Engineering led the design and build of the Core Stage Vertical Integration Center tool that will hold the core stage in a vertical position. “High Bay 2 tooling was originally scheduled to be complete for Artemis III. We had an opportunity to get it done earlier and that will put us in a good posture to complete work earlier than planned prior to moving the core stage for Artemis II into the full integrated stack over into in High Bay 3,” said Chad Bryant, deputy manager of the NASA SLS Stages Office. “This gives us an opportunity to go in and learn how to rotate, lift, and move the core stage into the high bay.” This move also doubles the footprint of useable space within the VAB, giving engineers access to both High Bay 2 and High Bay 3 simultaneously, while also freeing up space at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans to continue work on the individual elements for future SLS core stages. High Bay 2 has a long history of supporting NASA exploration programs: during Apollo, High Bay 2, one of four high bays inside the VAB, was used to stack the Saturn V rocket. During the Space Shuttle Program, the high bay was used for external tank checkout and storage and as an extra storage area for the shuttle. Under the new assembly model beginning with Artemis III, all the major structures for the SLS core stage will continue to be fully produced and manufactured at NASA Michoud.
