Last month, Blue Alliance proudly handed over a boat with a 15Hp outboard motor to the Gando Shehia Fishing Committee (SFC) in a special ceremony with the Wete District Commissioner, local officials, and the community. ?? The boat will be used for various activities including patrols, sustainable handline fishing, and rescue operations, helping to protect marine resources and support livelihoods. Key agreements stressed that the boat must not be used for illegal activities, only the activities mentioned above which support the health of the ecosystem and the strength of the community. This collaboration marks a major step towards sustainable fishing and marine conservation in the region. Great to see colleagues kicking off the new year with another case to protect nature from harmful practices: protected must mean protected?? ?? 2025 is going to have a big focus on protecting the ocean for both nature, people and the planet ahead of the UN Ocean Conference in June and the need for greater progress in delivering international climate commitments ahead of COP30 later in the year #NatureIsOurFuture
??New year, new case to finally put an end to destructive bottom trawling in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). This time, we're taking the Dutch government to court to stop bottom trawling in the Dogger Bank - a protected sand bank in the North Sea, home to sharks, minke whales, puffins and other endangered species. The UK government has already recognised the legal and ecological need to protect the Dogger Bank by closing it in UK waters to bottom trawling. Meanwhile, the Dutch government is flouting laws and allows bottom-towed gears to keep destroying precious marine ecosystems. The Netherlands aren’t the only country doing it - this is an EU-wide issue. It’s time for EU countries to respect their own laws and make sure that "Protected” means “Protected”. The 2024 Hazardous Fuels Transportation Assistance program garnered significant national attention, with 67 applications submitted representing 187 projects and requesting a total of $93 million. Ultimately, the USDA Forest Service awarded $20 million on Nov. 13 to fund 66 projects across 13 states, each contributing to wildfire risk reduction and landscape restoration efforts nationwide.
