One field that fascinates me is Urban Planning. I've always been fascinated by the spaces we live in and how we can improve them for the better. How we can improve our communities, promote green spaces, walkable cities, and public transportation options. This aligns with my values as I believe in the United States there's a lot of work that can be done to improve the spaces we live in for the better and make more livable, less car-centric cities. I hope to get into this field by pursuing the fifth year accelerated program in Community Development and Planning at Clark University. I'm only a freshman right now, so I'm still a while away from this, but I'm still working towards this by studying Geography and Political Science which are both very relevant to the field. My future in this urban planning could possibly entail working for government agencies which are relevant in the fields of planning and design, or possibly private institutions who are also involved in this.

HISTORY vs. THE EXPERTS. Historical preservation is a critical tool in evaluating expert advice, especially since experts are often the least motivated to admit they were wrong. Whether in personal relationships, government, or business, experts are frequently tasked with recording the results of their own advice and theories. As Winston Churchill famously quipped, "History will be kind to me, for I intend to write it." One example is the Urban Renewal programs that impacted American cities from the 1950s through the 1970s. The principle was simple enough—out with the old, in with the new. However, on a global scale, Urban Renewal became a behemoth amalgamation of experts and theoreticians dictating public policy on everything from economic development and tax legislation to urban design theory and social engineering. Expert advice steamrolled well-reasoned opposition and caused generations of damage without ever admitting error. Ultimately, Urban Renewal triggered a historical preservation movement that finally brought a halt to the wholesale dismantling of inner cities. The brutal history of Urban Renewal (which is, ironically, becoming a dubious cause celeb for a whole new generation of experts) is a cautionary tale about the dangers of experts running amok and the ability of history to hold them accountable. Taking the long view, Urban Renewal is also an example of limiting the principle that history is controlled by those with power. True, the powerful often have the most influence, but in a free society, they do not exclusively own history. Having said that, one should also be cautious in criticizing the powerful who won't admit fault because those without power are just as guilty. And for the same reason: human pride. Whether you're a grandma tasked with finding out who wiped out the cookie jar or a street cop taking witness statements at a drive-by shooting, you know that the desire to augment the historical narrative to suit self-interest is not reserved for those in power—it is a human frailty we all share equally. That’s why no historical record is free from bias. Urban Renewal, like hundreds of other expert-driven policy movements, demonstrates how preserving and evaluating history is critical to establishing guardrails around how we empower even the most well-meaning experts. #history #preservation #archives #architecture #experts ---------- This clip is from the 1956 film "The Dynamic American City." When planners or other professional age out of the work force, there is rarely a compilation of the reflections of their practice -- a loss of institutional knowledge. It is made worse when we realize the sunk cost to train that person who is leaving, and the cost to train the new person. This is a massive loss to the communities and/or organizations we serve. In my little park world, to address this, I created a FREE parks and urban planning vlog called "Parks Are Like Icebergs" on Substack. This vlog shares 4 decades long (and counting) perspectives on urban planning, parks planning and recreation and leisure services, informed by my recently completed Phd in parks decision-making. I recently updated the anthology of my posts, shown on the front page of my substack site. In addition, on a consulting basis, I can offer a service where we together develop a process where we document the high level reflections and learnings of your valued colleagues before they walk out the door -- knowledge transfer at its most extreme. As my Urban and Community Planning master's program at the Maryland School of Architecture, Planning & Preservation approaches its conclusion, I'm excited to reflect on a recent impactful experience. ??? At a community meeting in Lakeland, College Park, I had the privilege to present, along with other colleagues, the findings of our Community Planning Studio class. In this dynamic class, we delved into real-world challenges, applying the #scenarioplanning concept to address community planning issues related to #housing and land use, #community infrastructure, and #climatechange. The meeting was a culmination of our fall semester efforts, focusing on #restorativejustice for the black communities of Lakeland. ?? Moreover, this experience went beyond academic exploration. We were able to engage and create meaningful human connections with the community members, understanding their perspectives and needs intimately. This connection allowed me to experience firsthand the profound impact of urban planning on communities and my mission as a planner and architect. ?? Being able to actively contribute to discussions on such a crucial topic and witness the tangible impact of our research has been incredibly rewarding. It's a testament to the effectiveness of U.S. education in fostering practical skills and preparing students for the complexities of real-world scenarios. ????
