Law and policy are powerful tools for undoing the drivers of health inequity. What resources do state, tribal, local, and territorial (STLT) health departments need to harness law and policy to improve social determinants of health (SDOH)? ChangeLab Solutions has created a suite of resources to help STLT health departments more effectively use law and policy to advance health equity and respond to community health needs. These resources are tailored to meet specific needs articulated by public health practitioners, based on research and key informant interviews conducted with health department staff and leadership from a variety of backgrounds. A rather late, but nevertheless quite enthusiastic welcome to Chicago Dr Simbo Ige MD, MS, MPH! Thanks for placing mental health high on the list of public healthcare priorities. To be sure, mental health lies at the core of all social ills and is itself impacted and fueled by social determinants of health/social inequities. As a public health professional with focus on cancer inequities, I am acutely aware that fiscal challenges loom constantly over public health priorities and that municipalities often react to public health issues rather than plan proactively for them. Chicago is no different. …and change is needed. We need permanent foundational financial support for public health in our city and are thus heartened by the apparent posture of Mayor Brandon Johnson to transition the Chicago Department of Public Health from a primarily infectious disease agency into a truly public health agency through your proven expert leadership. Partnerships with community grassroots organizations like Equal Hope (Executive Director Dr Paris Thomas, PhD) and Sisters Working It Out SWIO (CEO Beulah Brent) are instrumental in social changemaking within the cancer health disparities arena. I encourage the Chicago Department of Public Health to deepen these relationships. Undoubtedly, social inequity disrupts mental health and well being…and impacts cancer, both embryonically and on the survivorship journey. Social inequity forestalls and cripples access to care, quality of care, surveillance of treatment, and dietary support, among so many others. Given that cancer inequity is an important public health issue, the time is overdue for it to fall under the aegis of departments of public health nationwide. Welcome Dr Simbo Ige MD, MS, MPH!! #cancerhealthequity #EqualHope #publichealthmatters
Much of the work to close gaps in life expectancy and address racial and other inequities in health outcomes happens at the local level in cities. Boston Public Health Commission is convening a special session with my colleagues who are leaders from around the country - Simbo Ige MD, MS, MPH, Damon Chaplin, Jenna Mandel-Ricci, Christopher O'Malley, and Steven Woolf MD MPH who will talk about the outstanding work underway in partnership with their local communities. If you will be at American Public Health Association's annual meeting in Minneapolis on Monday, please stop by this session. It's early, but will be worth it! #healthequity #lifeexpectancy #racialequity #APHA2024 #publichealthinaction NACCHO Big Cities Health Coalition
