Crosswind Landing: The Passenger Perspective and Experience. Thank you for requesting to hear about crosswind landing experiences. As a non-flight crew aviation professional, I will share my experience as a passenger and avionic engineer with extensive training in conventional and advanced flight systems. About 15 years ago, I was on a flight from London Stansted, to Savannah, Georgia USA, aboard a Gulfstream 550. We were scheduled to stop in Maine, USA, for customs and immigration clearance and refueling. It was during a bitter, gusty winter peak in the New England region. The flight on the private jet was enjoyable, with a lavish English breakfast and tasty lunch served. All catering had to be consumed before entry into the US, as required. The very highly experienced crew followed Jeppesen procedures, executing turns downwind precisely. The harmonious engine deceleration sounds were soothing. Suddenly, the aircraft lost altitude with a sharp yaw to the left. The crew alerted us to the impending bad weather and the likelihood of discomfort during the final landing phase and advised us to fasten our seat belts. The final stages of the landing were indeed bumpy and gusty, with the aircraft visibly angled to the landing direction.The landing was rough, accompanied by a loud noise upon touchdown. Upon disembarking, we discovered that the aircraft had landed far to the left of the runway, with the left undercarriage damaging a ground light. Fortunately, our beautiful Chatham City Grumman lady sustained no damage. A sigh of relief was shared among us, and the pilot's expression revealed the close call we had experienced. Cross-wind landings must be given the attention and the specific training they deserve! I fully buy into the idea and perception that innovation and development of systems that can perform or augment the pilots' efforts to mitigate and handle crosswind situations are areas of aircraft safety and operation consideration.
