I've given this project ????? for a few reasons.... ?? Building Type: Residential ?? Location: Stratford, London ?? Completed: 2016 ?? Architect: Allies and Morrison ?? Main Contractor: Lendlease ?? Key Supply Chain Partners: Byrne Bros (Formwork), Schüco UK Limited, AGC INTERPANE, Telling Architectural Systems. R W Simon Ltd, SFS Group, Wraxalls. In my experience a project is more likely to have a successful outcome if the key supply chain partners engage early to plan the delivery & consider potential problems. Lendlease recognised this and Lindner Prater Ltd were employed under a PCSA to complete key design & planning activities including, production of a 4D model to visualise sequence, duration & logistics. In addition, the innovative climbing platform access methodology allowed "stick build" construction to be utilised on these two highrise towers, where often a unitised facade solution would be employed. With the platforms rising every eight days, absolute focus was needed from the entire project team to deliver completed floors of facade on time & in full. Combine this with great collaboration throughout the supply chain & the result is a project successfully delivered & a pair of stunning apartment blocks. Not sure of the background to this but once again the fragility and slim margins of survival for architectural practices is brought into sharp focus. Many of us are not naturally business orientated but that is no excuse for late or deferred payment of fees, or expecting professional services to be provided at a fraction of the budget which doesn’t even allow many projects to be delivered ‘at cost’. Award winning practices should not be going to the wall, but it just goes to show that platitudes and gongs are worthless if they do not allow businesses to survive and prosper. I’m aware that I’m banging on a lot about this on here at the moment, but whilst fees continue to be compressed and the risk placed on architects continues to increase, there is little in the way of protection that seems to be available, and the RIBA continue to stay silent on the issue of fees and remuneration, instead choosing to promote an ￡85 million ‘house of architecture’ vanity project. So what to do… 1. Reintroduce the mandatory fee scale. 2. Make payment of fees properly enforceable with full legal weighting from the professional bodies we pay annual subscriptions for to chase bad debtors for non-payment of fees. 3. Have a long hard look at the procurement of architectural services and how client bodies should be held more accountable for their fiscal responsibilities. 4. Reduce the use of D&B contracts and limit novation. Things need to change. Now. #architect #architecture #fees #business

It happens - more than you would think! There are a range of ways our clients procure us and our peer competitors. Tenders are getting longer (and rightly so in areas like #SocialValue Jasmine Ceccarelli-Drewry, #DEI Bhavini Shah and #Sustainability Oli Pye) and the spec time we invest greater. We would much prefer to give the time used in tenders directly to prospective #publicsector clients on the job. Get things moving quickly. But we know it’s not always possible.
