In this month’s What’s Up @ WIF series, we are focusing our celebration energy on the one-year anniversary of WIF’s International Business Women’s Day Awards Luncheon and the power of multi-generation mentoring. Our theme was “Plant the Seed, Nurture the Girl, Grow the Future” and we celebrated women who 1) are recognized as being successful in their fields and 2) nurture girls and young women who look to achieve their own dreams of the future. The awards luncheon honored women business leaders who MENTOR – women who are thriving in business and whose living legacy includes actively supporting the youth who will become the women leaders of tomorrow. As part of our one-year anniversary celebration and remembrance of this beautiful event, Deborah Harlow met with some of the award recipients to “interview” them on what they’ve been up to over the past year. Here is Deborah’s video with Dr. Penny Ralston, who received the Community Leadership Award: for improving the lives of women and girls in her community and demonstrating a desire to share her talent with girls, encouraging them to grow into confident, successful women. Join us in celebrating Penny!

The term “Glass Cliff” was first used to describe the experience of women who were promoted to higher positions when organizations were struggling or in crisis, and the chance of failure was high, essentially leaving them standing on a “glass cliff.” The term has now been broadened to describe the challenging position many leaders of color find themselves in when they follow white leaders. In 2022, BoardSource partnered with the Building Movement Project to develop a resource to assist boards in alleviating the Glass Cliff. In early Spring 2023, we went further and interviewed and surveyed more than 40 BIPOC leaders to share their experiences. Through these interviews and surveys, we determined: - The need and interest in a BIPOC-only executive retreat for leaders of color. - The interest in establishing a cohort of BIPOC executives that would provide peer-to-peer support and mentorship. - The need for case studies as sector resources. - The need for facilitated training for board members focused on roles and responsibilities, governance, and the realities of the glass cliff. Applying our new theory of change, we have created a groundbreaking cohort-based initiative to support nonprofit leaders of color to help them avoid their own glass cliff, with the goal of developing programming and tools for leaders and their board members that can strengthen and uplift the entire sector. ?? Almost two years and a lot of paperwork later, The Outdoor Industry Women's Association (OIWA) is officially a 501(c)3! ?? A resounding shoutout to Taylor Murphy for founding and driving this incredible organization to fruition, and another to Jenna Celmer for expert guidance! ?? The idea for OIWA was born a few years back when women from across the industry came together to express their frustrations with the outdoor industry’s lack of gender diversity — what we learned is that there are SO MANY female-identifying folks in the industry who have ideas/goals/companies that WILL make the outdoors a better place to work and recreate, but also require funding. ?? Because women typically receive less than 2% of VC funding and most grant processes require the applying organization to have nonprofit status, we looked at what we could control and formed this nonprofit organization specifically to help female-identifying folks access funds through the grantmaking process. ?? I’m honored to have been invited to apply my passion for elevating female-identifying voices/ideas/initiatives to OIWA’s Board of Directors. Amazing things are on the horizon with Taylor Murphy as our Executive Director and Abigail H.’s outreach expertise as our Director of Community Impact. #OutdoorIndustry #501c3 #Launch
Introducing The Outdoor Industry Women’s Association (OIWA), a 501(c)3 organization dedicated to elevating the leadership, ideas, and initiatives of female identifying folks in a male dominated outdoor industry. We plan to drive equity and innovation for female founders in this space by facilitating resources to apply for grants that fund their for-profit business ventures. It’s simple: we want to see more female identifying folks as leaders in the outdoor industry. But this isn’t just about gender. It’s about taking action, at scale, to evolve the outdoors. Welcome to our association. We’re so happy you’re here. Learn more or reach out to us here: https://lnkd.in/gQ8PKMEA

While March may have been Women's History Month, today, we celebrate diversity and leadership at Women Leaders in Code Enforcement 2024. As we approach the fourth annual Women Leaders in Code Enforcement (#WLCE2024) national conference on April 22, we reflect on the remarkable journey of women in the field of code enforcement and building regulations. This conference is not just an event; it's a pivotal gathering that marks a significant stride toward a more inclusive, equitable, and diverse professional community. (Although, we're psyched about the yoga ??♂? and paint & sip events too!) The significance of diversity in leadership and teamwork cannot be overstated. Research consistently shows that diverse voices in leadership positions lead to more innovative, inclusive, and successful outcomes. The WLCE 2024 conference is championing this cause, providing a platform for women code enforcement professionals to share experiences, challenges, and triumphs. This year's agenda is particularly compelling. It features veteran code enforcement officials who have paved the way for women in the industry. These trailblazers will share their stories of being the first women in their roles, offering invaluable insights into their journeys. Additionally, the conference will tackle pressing issues such as community engagement, the balance between being a mother and pursuing a career, and the evolving landscape of code enforcement leadership. The WLCE 2024 conference is more than just a gathering; it's a celebration of progress, a testament to the resilience and strength of women in code enforcement, and a beacon for future leaders. It's an opportunity to connect with peers, learn from pioneers, and be inspired by the collective wisdom and dedication of women shaping the future of code enforcement and building regulation. Discover strategies to maximize your conference experience, engage with thought leadership, and contribute to the ongoing dialogue about diversity in professional settings. Whether you're attending #WLCE2024 or supporting from afar, your engagement matters in driving forward the conversation and actions toward inclusive leadership. ?? It’s incredibly inspiring to hear from these young future leaders, sharing their stories of how they’ve realized their potential and begun making an impact. The Goals for Girls program is designed to build up strong, confident young women by providing them with the tools, mentorship, and support that many of us wish we had access to at their age. By empowering these future leaders, we’re helping shape the next generation of change-makers. What advice would you give to your younger self? How would you encourage her to recognize and embrace her full potential?
