?? Don't Forget Your Skittles - I write about why it's important to celebrate our accomplishments, recalling an interaction with one of my daughters when she was much younger. It's a 2 min read. Here's some brief context As we get older, our lives become busier and more complicated. There's more to do. There's more at stake. There's more to balance. We're always trying to catch up, and sometimes we're simply trying to be a little less far behind. Time becomes a resource to be optimized or efficiently used; checklists serve as our guide. We finish one shift, paper, or project, and move on to the next. After all, there's so much more to be done. NF Awareness Month is wrapping up tomorrow. Let's get more stories of NF warriors in! Meet Nina! My name is Angelina, but everyone calls me Nina. I am 28 years old and have Neurofibromatosis type 1, which I was diagnosed with at 7 months of age. The first complication I had was congenital pseudarthrosis of the right tibia, and after a handful of unsuccessful surgeries, my leg had to be amputated at the age of 2. After my amputation, I was fitted for a prosthesis, and that's how I've been getting around ever since. I've had other complications and countless surgeries related to NF, and have overcome them one step at a time. Now, at 28 years old, I have finished my studies in child development in college and received my assistant and associate teacher certificates, all while dealing with learning disabilities associated with NF. For the last 12 years, I've worked with kids and am currently a teacher, which I love! I have always had a passion for wanting to work with kids due to my experience with NF and all that I have overcome with this disease. I want to teach kids that even if they are different, they can also achieve what everyone else can. Dealing with my NF every day is hard, but I have never complained and always had a positive outlook on life because of the love and support from my family. Multiple aspects of structural racism contribute to poorer health outcomes for many Black people in the United States. Access to quality housing, education, nutritious food, and medical facilities are limited for many in this community. Additionally, bias among medical personnel in the delivery of health care further exacerbates this systemic problem. National organizations and local efforts are recognizing the harms caused by the inappropriate incorporation of race as a factor in medical care. Will the removal of the listing of African American race as a moderate-risk factor for preeclampsia from ACOG’s committee opinion would be a small step in advancing this important effort? It's not race, it's racism. It's time to recognize and address the systemic problem of structural racism in healthcare. We are pleased to share that over 25 patients have joined the ASCENT ASD study and received a reSept ASD occluder for the closure of their atrial septal defect (ASD) in the Midwest to date. This results from the joint effort of a significant group of hospitals actively enrolling patients in this region. Patients with an ASD that needs to be closed may contact seven Midwestern centers, to learn if they may participate in the ASCENT ASD study.
