NHS England has announced that it has seen record numbers of women accessing specialist perinatal mental #health support. ?? #NHS statistics show that over 57,000 new and expectant mothers received specialist mental health support between March 2023 and February 2024. This is up a third compared to the previous year, with just over 43,000 women accessing this type of help between March 2022 and February 2023. ?? New online course ‘Supporting yourself and others after traumatic events’ — free to Members for a limited time. CRANAplus Mental Health & Wellbeing team has released an online course on trauma, designed to enable rural and remote health workers to improve their understanding of what they are experiencing and to recognise strategies to better support themselves, others and their workplaces after traumatic events. Until 30 June 2024, CRANAplus Members can access this course for free. The course guides participants through a range of practical strategies and real-life scenarios to help them to: ? Identify trauma and common responses ? Discover ways to support themselves and others ? Learn what workplaces can do to support their employees ? Know when and where to seek additional support. This course is suitable for anyone supporting the delivery of health care in a rural or remote community. This includes nurses, doctors, midwives, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers/practitioners, paramedics, aged care workers, allied health professionals, interns and students. From July onward, the course can be accessed by Members for a small fee ($10 for Mem-bers, $20 for non-Mem-bers). CPD hours are avail-able and spec-i-fied on the cer-tifi-cate of completion. *Save the date* Essential knowledge for preventing maternal suicide webinar The APP Webinar 2024 will take place on Wednesday 16th October at 12pm. This free webinar is open to GPs and other frontline health professionals including midwives, health visitors and antenatal educators. APP experts, women with lived experience and clinicians will highlight the early signs and symptoms of postpartum psychosis and discuss how GPs can work with perinatal mental health teams to prevent maternal suicides. More than 2,500 health professionals signed up for last year’s webinar. Of the attendees, 92% rated the training as ‘excellent’; 8% rated it ‘good’ and 100% agreed they would change their practice as a result: "The webinar exceeded my expectations. It is not often that I will watch a webinar that has such a profound emotional impact on me and left me thinking and talking about a topic in the days after (in a positive way). There are no words that can really sum up how powerful this webinar was. I watched this with a student nurse and it created such a rich conversation. Thanks so much to all involved. Calling All Professionals: Shape the Future of Support for Care-Experienced Parents We’re conducting research to better understand the dynamics between care-experienced parents and the professionals who support them. Our aim is to identify communication gaps and enhance practices that lead to improved outcomes. To achieve this, we’ve developed three hypothetical scenarios and invite insights from social workers, health visitors, midwives, family nurse practitioners, GPs, mental health professionals, and team leaders. You'll be asked to “fill in the story” from each character’s perspective, focusing on emotional experiences and how information is shared and understood. When you don't ask us postnatally, 'How are you feeling?' We read this as, 'I should be coping.' When our babies are born prematurely or sick, and spend time in a #NICU, we are 80% more likely as their parents, to experience psychological distress, than parents who haven't (Bliss research data). And it's as simple as that. The data is against us right from the outset. This #MaternalMentalHealthAwarenessweek #MMHAW24 I too, implore clinicians to ensure that every contact with women sees their mental health prioritised in line with their physical health - #antenatally and #postnatally. Every contact. Every time. Patient Safety Learning have kindly hosted my thoughts on how clinicians can support women postnatally, when their babies are in #NICU. And i've also considered beyond. Because our experience of #NICU doesn't leave us, just because we left the unit. Spending time in #NICU/ #Neonatalcare with your baby is traumatic. Whether your baby was there for a day, a few weeks, or even months. Building #trusting, #listening relationships that validate how women are feeling postnatally, can #empower them with #choice and #information about support they can access, at the right time for them. It recognises that whilst the trauma cannot be erased, our care can go a long way to mitigate the experiences postnatally. At GPS we believe that the most effective, impactful support groups are evidence-based—meaning that they are designed based on the objective findings of the best available current research. Research has shown that peer support is an effective tool to support people’s mental health, especially those who work in the healthcare field. We draw on such research to develop GPS support groups. A 2020 editorial by U.K. scholars Jill Maben and Jackie Bridges in the Journal of Clinical Nursing, for instance, emphasized the importance of peer support for nurses working through the COVID-19 pandemic, citing recent research and examples from previous similar crises. Maben and Bridges developed guidance to support nurses’ psychological well-being in the pandemic that noted, “It can be helpful to accept and acknowledge that your own and others’ feelings of stress and distress are a normal response to an extraordinary situation, and that ‘it is okay not to be okay.’ … Talk to your colleagues who may well relate to what you’re experiencing and may be needing support themselves. Staff huddles or handovers can be useful ways to check in with each other, and shared breaks also present opportunities. Instigate and support opportunistic ‘team off-load’ time if opportunities are otherwise rare. Be sensitive to people’s different preferences – some will be more private and others more open, so adapt how you look out for them accordingly. Enhancing Perinatal Mental Health Support for Medical Trainees The burnout crisis among physicians is out of control, and it’s hitting young trainees and women the hardest. The medical system wasn’t designed for women’s needs, leading to major gaps in support for pregnant trainees. Women are already facing high burnout rates and juggling fertility issues, pregnancy, and caregiving. The recent legal protections, like the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, are a step forward, but compliance is still hit or miss. ? Let’s be real: academic medicine needs a massive overhaul. Pregnant trainees often deal with inadequate support and mental health struggles like postpartum depression, which is way too common. The parental leave policies are still laughably short—six weeks is a joke when 12 weeks is the bare minimum needed. Returning to work isn’t any better; lack of lactation support and childcare options just add to the stress. ? It’s high time for a serious change. Investing in better perinatal policies isn’t just nice to have—it’s essential for reducing burnout, supporting women in medicine, and improving overall diversity in the field. Here at Maternal Mental Health NOW, we offer a series of online courses to help increase knowledge based on your continuing education needs. This Intersectionality and Perinatal Mental Health course is for healthcare professionals working with families in the perinatal period. This includes mental health professionals, nurses, physicians and midwives, doulas and birth workers, lactation consultants, health educators and more. Wendy Ashley, PsyD, LCSW and Anna King, LCSW, PMH-C will address intersectionality as it relates to perinatal mental health and implications to the mental and physical well-being of birthing people and families. Participants will review the definition of intersectionality, tools and tips for becoming an intersectional practitioner, and ways to navigate their own discomfort in the process. Participants will also receive an introduction to BIPOC maternal health disparities and guidance for shifting from striving for cultural competence, to aligning with a journey toward cultural humility.
