A note on hydration for the holidays. This time of year we tend to eat a lot more treats, many of which are packed with salt. While the heavy salt intake might not affect most beyond bloating, it can affect people more with asthma, heart conditions, etc. One of the key reasons is dehydration. I have mild asthma and can walk 10 miles per day. If I don't drink enough water, I get winded walking two flights of stairs. I know this, so I don't get scared. I drink water as soon as possible and I feel fine. On the other hand, my 77-year-old mom was recently visiting my older brother and she's on blood thinners. She was feeling shortness of breath and wondered if her heart was fading. I asked her what her water drinking was like; she was drinking half what she normally does while eating out for every meal for three days without asking for less salt on her foods. She drank more water the day we talked and no longer experienced shortness of breath. You should always consult your doctor if you feel anything life-threatening. The easiest thing you can do for your health in the holiday season is increase your water intake by a glass or two (unless your doctor advises you to limit water intake). Whether or not you eat treats in moderation, this can boost your health without eliminating cookies. #wellnessexpert #hydration #wellnessplans #healthjournalist
