Nootropics are touted as “smart drugs” meant to improve cognitive performance. But there’s a lot we still don’t know about them. This cognitive boost is meant to be above our normal baseline, explains Dr. Scott Small, professor of neurology and Director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center at Columbia University. Different parts of the brain govern different cognitive abilities, such as memory, abstract reasoning, decision-making, and speed of processing. Nootropics are intended to target these areas, he tells Fortune. But just how well do nootropics work? Read more: bit.ly/4d9HIou

Assistant Professor, Co-Director Diversity Equity and Inclusion | Vascular Neurologist, Neurohospitalist
I am deeply humbled and honored to be part of SEQUINS (https://www.s-equi-ns.org/) a remarkable initiative dedicated to advancing brain health equity through cutting-edge science. As Dr. Bruce Ovbiagele, MD, MSc, MAS, MBA, MLS eloquently stated, "Equity neuroscience is the study of how the brain is mechanistically affected by varying opportunities to attain ideal health, and of the distinctive barriers and facilitators to optimal functioning of the nervous system. The research subject is the human condition—encompassing individuals, communities, and organizations worldwide. Its remit includes basic science, public health, and a bidirectional local-to-global scope. Equity neuroscience ideally promotes multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary research, fostering a scholarly community. Exemplary topics include the neurobiology of bias and compassion, sociohistorical epigenomics, implementation science, the science of inclusive enrollment and retention, and workforce research." I look forward to actively engaging in this vital work and collaborating with others who share a deep commitment to advancing brain health equity. #EquityNeuroscience #HealthEquity Yale School of Management The Commonwealth Fund Winn Awards University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus Bob Pozen Howard Forman Rosana Gonzalez-Colaso Marcella Nunez-Smith, MD, MHS

Sensory, Auditory and Visual Evoked Potentials (EP) are electro-physiological tests that measure and evaluate the integrity of peripheral, spinal cord, brainstem, and brain projections of sensory electrical activity in the human body. Analysis of these responses assesses the integrity and function of these pathways, helping diagnose and prognosticate certain central and peripheral nervous system disorders. EP tests, along with advanced imaging, provide valuable insights into neurological health. The addition of Pain Neuroscience Education (PNE) to therapeutic exercise (TE) and manual therapy (MT) improves craniofacial pain disability in the immediate-term but does not improve its natural course. The combination of PNE, TE and MT should be used in cases of related kinesiophobia or catastrophism. We should act from a less complex perspective to respect the self-limiting nature of temporomandibular disorders. Premio A. G. V. y J.L E de SEDCYDO Financiado por el ROE. Sugar-coated Painkillers: Study Reveals the Trick Behind the Placebo Effect Placebo works in a "magical" way. A sugar pill can sometimes lessen pain just because you believe it's a real medication. But how exactly does the mind influence our physical sensations? A new study published in Nature Magazine sheds light on this fascinating phenomenon! Researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill identified a specific brain circuit in mice that seems to be responsible for placebo pain relief. The new research led by Gregory Scherrer has identified a specific neural circuit responsible for placebo-induced pain relief. This circuit involves the rostral anterior cingulate cortex (rACC) and the pontine nucleus (Pn), areas previously linked to movement and coordination rather than pain perception. The study also shows the pontine nucleus to contain abundant opioid receptors, suggesting a link between the placebo effect and the body's natural pain-relief system. It also highlights the Purkinje cells in the cerebellum exhibiting activity patterns similar to those in the rACC→Pn pathway during pain relief expectation. This discovery has the potential to revolutionize pain management. It opens doors to developing new types of drugs or even non-invasive therapies that target this specific brain circuit. The study also raises intriguing questions about individual differences in the placebo effect. Why does it work for some people and not others? What makes it fade over time? Much like how traditional medical approaches are not for everyone, not all neuroCAM* treatments will work for everyone. The Modality of Personalized Treatments seeks to understand why this is so healthcare practitioners can make informed decisions about people as unique individuals. This often involves the development of new assessment tools for subtle changes in our brains to help make these determinations. A recent Branch Out study found that glutamate (a neurochemical) could help identify those with treatment-resistant depression who might benefit from TMS**. This research suggests that brain scans could enable a personalized approach to depression, potentially "jump-starting" recovery and addressing the growing impact of depression on society. *neuroCAM is the neuroscience of Complementary and Alternative Modalities **Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation . . . #personalizedtreatments #personalizedmedicine #neuroCAM #branchoutnf #alternativeneuroscience #neurologicaldisorders
