Honoring the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz . On January 27, 2025, we solemnly observed the 80th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz, remembering the resilience of Holocaust Survivors and the lives lost. This milestone is a testament to the importance of preserving history and educating future generations about the atrocities of the past. In 2016, Weisser Engineering & Surveying (WES) was honored to have played a role in the expansion and improvement of Holocaust Museum Houston, a space dedicated to remembrance, education, and the fight against intolerance. Working alongside Project Architect, PGAL, WES provided professional Land Surveying & Platting services to support the museum’s transformation from a 21,000 to 57,000 square-foot campus. This expansion created new classrooms, an amphitheater, and exhibition areas to house additional artifacts donated by local Survivors, ensuring that their stories live on. As we reflect on this anniversary, WES stands in support of Holocaust education and the commitment to Never Forget. . . #HolocaustRemembrance #NeverForget #SurveyingHistory #ProjectFeature #LandSurveying #Engineering #CivilEngineering #Museum?Photography By: G. So beautiful & so important
UPDATE: This intricate 12th-century carving depicting the Deposition from the Cross is one of the most historically important items to have been on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum. We’re pleased to announce that the V&A has successfully raised funds to acquire this object. The acquisition is generously supported by a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund and Art Fund as part of a national public appeal which included support from grant-making organisations, individuals, members of the V&A Director’s Circle and Young Patrons’ Circle, V&A Members, and those who left a legacy gift in their Will. The intricate carving is heralded as one of the finest and most important examples of English Romanesque ivory carving to survive today. It will be re-united with the only known surviving piece believed to be of the same ensemble - a fragmentary ivory carving of Judas at the Last Supper, reported to have been discovered in Wakefield in the 18th century. The successful acquisition will see the sculpture enter the V&A's permanent collection and return to public display in V&A South Kensington's Medieval and Renaissance galleries later this year. MAKE ART NOT WAR. In response to the pressing conflicts of our time, we present the "Make Art Not War" T-shirt, a powerful statement for peace and creativity. This series blends the spirit of protest with a reverence for iconic Human Rights activists and symbols of peace. At the heart of the collection is Jess McDonald's hand-drawn illustration of Pax, the Roman Goddess of Peace, boldly emblazoned with graffiti-style lettering that reads "Make Art Not War." This design harks back to the 1960s mantra, "Make Love, Not War," and draws inspiration from Shepard Fairey’s iconic "Make Art Not War" poster, first created during the Iraq War. This T-shirt is more than just apparel—it’s a message of resistance, hope, and the enduring power of art to foster change. Each purchase helps spread that message, with 10% of profits going directly to Unicef, supporting children affected by war and conflict. https://lnkd.in/g5Mhy6fW

"Sankofa: How Art Can Be Used To Honor Our Stories Today" Murals and public art are more than just creative expressions—they are living, breathing testaments to history. By turning everyday spaces into vibrant tributes, public art ensures that the stories of courage, resilience, and community are never lost. In a world where history can fade into the background, murals keep it alive, inspiring reflection and connection. Art as a Bridge to History ?? Murals have a unique ability to connect us to the stories that shaped our world. They celebrate unsung heroes, capture pivotal moments, and provide a sense of pride for generations to come. Through color and form, art transcends words, giving life to history in ways that resonate deeply. The Hunton Life Saving Crew Mural ?? One such example is the mural I recently created to honor the Hunton Life Saving Crew, the nation’s first all-Black rescue squad. This group of trailblazers risked their lives to save others at a time when racial segregation was deeply entrenched. The mural not only commemorates their courage and dedication but also sheds light on their significant contributions to public service and equality. It stands as a tribute to their legacy while encouraging reflection on the progress still needed in the fight for justice and inclusion. Why Art Matters ?? Public art like this serves as a bridge between history and modern life. It reminds us of the struggles and triumphs of those who came before us and inspires action for a better future. Art is not just decoration—it is a call to remember, reflect, and honor. #PublicArt #MuralsMatter #MuralsWithMeaning

The Room of Hair at Auschwitz: A Powerful Testament to History At Auschwitz I, Block 4 houses one of the most haunting exhibits of the Holocaust - the Room of Hair. This somber display serves as a stark reminder of the atrocities committed during World War II and the importance of preserving historical memory. Key aspects of this exhibit: ? Contains nearly two tons of human hair from an estimated 40,000 victims ? Located in Block 4 at Auschwitz I ? Represents only a fraction of what was discovered upon liberation ? Demonstrates the industrial scale of Nazi crimes ? Photography is prohibited out of respect for the victims While deeply emotional, this exhibit plays a crucial role in education and remembrance. As professionals across various fields, we have a collective responsibility to learn from history and ensure such horrors are never repeated. The preservation of such sites and artifacts is vital for: Education: Providing tangible evidence of historical events Remembrance: Honoring the victims and survivors Warning: Serving as a caution against the dangers of hatred and intolerance Research: Offering invaluable resources for historians and scholars I invite fellow professionals to share their thoughts on the importance of historical preservation and education in preventing future atrocities. How can we, in our respective fields, contribute to this crucial effort? For those interested in learning more about Auschwitz and its significance, I've written a comprehensive guide: https://lnkd.in/ecxCD2bk #Holocaust #Auschwitz #HistoricalPreservation #NeverForget #Education #ProfessionalResponsibility

Saratoga: A Founding Scene in the US Capitol Rotunda As our beautiful, symbolic US Capitol takes center stage once again for another presidential inauguration, it’s worth reflecting on the powerful artwork that surrounds this historic space. Among the four massive portraits in the Rotunda, John Trumbull’s depiction of the Saratoga Surrender holds a place of honor. This iconic painting, illustrating a pivotal moment in America’s struggle for independence, continues to oversee solemn occasions such as state funerals and the swearing-in of presidents. Trumbull’s portrayal of America’s Turning Point—the Surrender at Saratoga—reminds us of the moment that saved the American Revolution and helped usher in the era of self-governance. Take a moment to appreciate how history continues to shape our present, with Saratoga standing as a symbol of resilience and triumph in the heart of the Capitol. #Saratoga #USCapitol #HistoricalLegacy #AmericasTurningPoint #PresidentialInauguration #ArtAndHistory #SaratogaSurrender
