Since I started Way and Words, LLC, one of the most popular things I’m hired for is Storytelling Workshops. It was a surprise. Marketers are typically great storytellers so why would they need this type of support? After doing a few of them, I noticed it wasn’t that marketing teams didn’t know how to tell stories, but rather there are three areas that stalled it out: 1. Misalignment on some of the core elements that make up a story? 2. Frustration and blockers around finding great stories within an organization. 3. Struggles internally to move away from a features or “speeds and feeds” focus In a sea of sameness - which is what B2B tech is a lot of the time - the vast majority of go-to-market tactics become background noise. If you don’t have a bottomless budget (and who does?), the only way to stand out is a great story, told to the right audience, at the right time and the right place. That’s a lot to know and coordinate, but honestly, that’s #marketing and #communications. Say you have the channels and the audience nailed down - if your story is bland or over reliant on product features, it will continue to fade into obscurity. If the way you tell it doesn’t have a sound strategy, the dollars spent on marketing might as well be set on fire. If you’re a marketing leader, have a convo with your team about the three areas above that might be inhibiting better storytelling and where a better told story might make your overall marketing strategy more effective.?
