Dinner with Fernando Fontanillo-Lopez PHR this week taught me two things: That Germans are no fun when it comes to recycling ?? And, how important face-to-face connections are in an otherwise global organization. Last October, we transformed our HR operating model into a global, functionally driven organization, which brought Fernando into the role of Global HR Business Partner. Based in Silicon Valley, he now leads a team that spans the globe and is a prime example of truly functional and global leadership. ? Leading a functional organization means that responsibility and ownership are distributed globally. ? It may mean that your manager is halfway around the world, or that you have early morning and late-night meetings. ? But it also means a truly global network and ownership, the breaking down of local silos, and a lean organization where knowledge flows. ? So what does all this have to do with recycling in Germany? It was one of the anecdotes Fernando shared with me over dinner as he reminisced about the last two months he spent in Germany on a business visit. I guess these are the real intercultural encounters you keep for life ?? ? A big thank you to you, Fernando, for dedicating two months to strengthening the interpersonal connections within our team. Today we kick of our annual awareness week. Why is it important for Bonava and our H&S work? Well, it provides an opportunity to once a year stop, reflect together and learn something new so we can keep on creating H&S. We are on a journey and this is one of our ways to improve. This year our theme is “walk the talk”.
