On Tuesday, a few members of our team had the privilege of volunteering with Father Joe's Villages serving lunch to those in need. As part of Father Joe’s wider mission to serve San Diegans experiencing homelessness and poverty, the Franklin Antonio Public Lunch Program offers free warm, nutritious meals to the public 365 days a year.?

I appreciate this video a lot. Sharing stories in non-profit communications, particularly in the sector I work in, can be tricky at times. But also, not? When I was newer to comms at MSP, I shared many stories from folks who used our services that would be considered exploitative poverty pornography. At the time, it felt like the best way for people to learn about our work and thus be inspired to donate. At the time, I thought I was doing good work. I thought people needed to know what was happening in our city. While sharing stories - and sometimes really raw or even shocking stories - of folks' lived experience may have 'worked' in helping people learn about MSP and want to support the work the organization does, it was not the best or most ethical way to share our work. Since then, I am thankful to have had the opportunity to grow and change my approach to storytelling. It took time, professional and personal growth, and also being called out by the community, by folks who care about the most marginalized in our city, questioning if we (I) had a right to be sharing a particular story. This was hard to hear at the time, but I am so thankful for the people who cared and who questioned the ethics of sharing certain stories. They helped me understand the privilege and, thus, the responsibility I hold as a communications professional. Always be open to learning and growing, right? If you work in non-profit communications, check out the video and learn how its message can be applied to your own storytelling.

Are "success stories" shared by non-profits and governments truly authentic or just a form of exploitation? In this week's video, we delve into the complexities of storytelling in the social sector. Often, organizations showcase exceptional cases to portray a skewed narrative, overlooking those still on the journey to improvement. When done for the purposes of fundraising, organizations are likely engaging in poverty pornography. Let's challenge the status quo and explore storytelling that truly uplifts and empowers, which is non-coercive and inclusive. Amid our bustling lives, it's crucial to reflect on the impact of fear and its profound influence on our perceptions of poverty and homelessness. This quote from Terence Lester is a powerful reminder of the destructive force that fear can be when left unchecked. DuPage County, like many other communities, grapples with the challenges of poverty and homelessness. Fear can not only hinder the growth of empathy for people facing these realities, but it can also obstruct our ability to address the root causes of these issues. Here's how you can help eradicate fears and assumptions about poverty and homelessness: ?? Challenge Stereotypes: Recognize unfounded fears and open your heart to understanding what fighting homelessness looks like. ?? Foster Empathy: Poverty can touch anyone. Let's create a community where seeking help is met with understanding. ?? Partner with Community Organizations: Create team volunteering outings or contribute to groups making a difference in DuPage. Bridge Communities offers many opportunities for community members to get involved in supporting those struggling with homelessness. Together, let's turn fear into understanding and hatred into empathy. Next Tuesday our Architectus team (Llewyn Andrew , Senlina Mayer, Shannon de Sousa, Declan Toon , John Snell , Lisa Herbohn and myself) will be sleeping out for homelessness to fundraise for Second Chance Programme. We would love your support from as little as the cost of your daily coffee, it will all go a long way. Should you wish to donate to support this cause: https://lnkd.in/gFqR_E_W A little bit about the sleepout: Not a day goes by where the acute issues of housing risk and homelessness are discussed. The high cost of living, housing affordability, domestic violence and impacted mental health are pushing more and more average Australian households into untenable housing instability. At the same time, billions of dollars are pledged by government and private charities to fix a problem that remains stubbornly persistent. So, what can we do to make a meaningful difference in this unfolding national disaster? Many small moves targeting those most at risk to support their transition to stable housing can make a profound difference to a person’s life. Our Sleepout for Homelessness campaign has been doing that by working in partnership with the Queensland-based volunteer-run charity Second Chance Programme. Many women and children are coping as best as they can under increasing threats to hang on to a place to call home, sometimes at risk to their lives. Second Chance Programme has been supporting women and children transitioning to safety. This targeted funding keeps women and children alive during what can be the most dangerous time. Every dollar donated goes to help women in need. We are talking about all women in all kinds of circumstances - support for no-income women in Australia without a Centrelink safety net; support for indigenous mothers, women escaping violence, women in the regions, and older women bringing their life back together. This No-woman-left-behind approach results in helping alleviate child poverty. Second Chance provides targeted funds into the Combined Women’s Refuge network and programs run by others that support women on their journey. Second Chance fills the gaps where mainstream funding doesn’t reach because Second Chance are on the ground and know the local context. They have been there for the long haul.

The National Alliance to End Homelessness recently released the results of new public opinion poll about how Americans view homelessness. Of the many findings, direct service providers and nonprofit organizations are perceived to be among the most trusted to handle the work that builds solutions for homelessness, but there is a recognition that these organizations don't have enough resources. Given that homelessness in the United States is currently at the highest levels in the history of record keeping by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, organizations like CaringWorks are more critical than ever in implementing proven solutions to end homelessness. Read the summary of the opinion poll at https://rebrand.ly/rqcwyge, and learn how you can be part of the solution to end homelessness by supporting CaringWorks at caringworksinc.org. #endhomelessness #caringworks

“To make progress toward ending homelessness as we know it, we must close this revolving door and stop homelessness before it starts." ? Did you know? Just this week, the US Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH) adopted and released the first-ever federal framework on homelessness prevention. This framework outlines various methods of homelessness prevention, including prevention, diversion, and stabilization - all areas of Family Promise of Greater Wichita programming that seek to end family homelessness here in the our community! ????You can support FPGW's prevention efforts (and have your impact DOUBLED right now!) by investing in these programs here: https://lnkd.in/gf99N-Yj ??You can read more about the USICH's framework here: https://lnkd.in/gUQ4f7Mf

Every week, our team hear from so many individuals and families who are struggling to find their next meal. These aren’t just statistics; they’re heart-wrenching stories of real people facing unimaginable challenges. An 82-year-old woman who can only afford to eat once a day in order to pay her rent and hold onto her home or a 7-year-old boy who feels he has no choice but to steal food because there’s nothing at home—these are only a few stories of the hidden faces of hunger and desperation. We believe wholeheartedly in the power of collaboration. By working together, we can make a profound impact. Early intervention is crucial to preventing homelessness and offering the support that can potentially change lives. There are so many ways you and your teams can get involved, please reach out and let’s have a chat [email protected]. Your support can bring hope and so much relief to people who need it the most, and show them that they are not alone and that there is a community ready to stand by them and help! #foodrelief #1millmeals #collaborationiskey
Homelessness prevention programs are more critical than ever with more than 3 million people living below the poverty line and at risk of homelessness. Dignity’s Food Relief program assists people at risk of homelessness in the community and eases the financial burden of putting food on the table. Our food relief freezers are purposefully located within community-based organisations, where food relief recipients can be connected in with other available services to prevent homelessness from occurring. Dignity’s recently announced ‘1 Million Meals’ project aims to provide one million food relief meals free of charge to people at risk of homelessness in Australia. Lighthouse MI's annual meeting this week presented a compelling case that more resources are needed in our region to alleviate poverty, to address food insecurity, to create affordable housing solutions, and to provide supplemental supportive services. For instance, of the 1,147 people known to be homeless annually in Oakland County, less than 1,000 received shelter because there are only 172 permanant county-wide, year-round shelter beds. Check Lighthouse MI's website to learn more about their plans to build a new campus, and to find out about volunteer activities, too: https://lighthousemi.org/ #affordablehousing #commercialrealestate
