There are four million adults with disabilities whose sole source of income is Supplemental Security Income (SSI). They are priced out of every housing market in the country and would have to spend 125% of their entire income to afford basic housing. We are thrilled to be able to partner with The Kelsey! https://thekelsey.org/. https://lnkd.in/g_TcwKaE

Our Third Sector is at Breaking Point??? Cuts, inequity, and constant struggles to fairly treat our staff - this is sadly the reality for third sector organisations like ours delivering essential services. As our CEO Billy Alexander shares his thoughts on Anna Fowlie of SCVO (Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations) new blog, it's clear we can’t keep rearranging deck chairs on a sinking ship. https://lnkd.in/eEnMB6-w It’s time for?real change and the third sector needs to be treated fairly and have the resources to serve our communities effectively. Government must rethink their approach before it’s too late. #FairFunding #ThirdSector #VoluntarySector #CommunitySupport #GovernmentAction #EqualResources #SupportNonprofits #CrisisPoint #ActionNow https://lnkd.in/eSxTwDk8

Later this week, we're announcing our 2024 Affordable Housing Program (AHP) recipients. This year's awardees will receive grants of up to $1 million each to help fund the acquisition, construction or rehabilitation of properties for use as affordable rental or owner-occupied housing. Our grants have a profound effect on the communities we serve, too. See here how an AHP grant positively impacted 2020 recipient CASS Housing, a Fort Wayne, Ind.-based organization dedicated to creating and maintaining customizable, affordable, sustainable and safe living arrangements that promote independent living skills for people with developmental and/or intellectual disabilities. Our 2024 AHP winners will be announced on fhlbi.com on Friday, Nov. 22!

We build all kinds of homes. This is one is our smallest, it’s an independent living home for a young adult. It’s part of the Department for Education and Bristol Council’s innovative Staying Close project, that provides supported living housing for young residential care leavers. Co-designed with a cohort of young care leavers, Staying Close is developing pathways to living independently and a choice of supported accommodation options, including on-site, nearby, self-contained or shared for as long as is needed. Why is this needed? There are 2,300 children’s homes in the UK. Each year, over 8,000 children turn 18 & have to leave the homes they have grown up in. Many can become at risk of homelessness & abuse. The Staying Close project helps young adults transition from supported to independent living. A stronger start for young people in Lilydale In 2022-23, more than 800 young people in the Lilydale area were experiencing or at risk of homelessness. To tackle this crisis, The Foyer Foundation is advocating for a 40-bed Youth Foyer in Lilydale. Youth Foyers provide: ?? A safe and stable home for 16–24 year olds. ?? Support for education, employment, and life skills — all under one roof. The model works. With a global track record spanning three decades, Youth Foyers deliver real results: ?? Every $1 invested provides a $6 return through reduced welfare, justice, and health costs. Our local partner, Anchor has identified vacant student accommodation for refurbishment, an education partner is ready, and architects are engaged. All we need is funding to bring this vision to life. This Christmas, imagine the difference this Youth Foyer could make for Lilydale’s young people. Together, we can create brighter futures ?? #10NewFoyers #50FoyersBy2030 #YouthHomelessness #housingcrisis #housingsolutions #YouthFoyers #EndYouthHomelessness #LilydaleYouth

Too many children are removed from their parents. Far too much money is spent on removing them, and not enough is invested in prevention and family support. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisations, which receive just 6% of funding, deliver much better results. As Catherine Liddle, Co-convener of Coalition of Peaks and CEO SNAICC - National Voice for our Children highlights, ‘The Aboriginal community-controlled sector gets much better results and is more likely to keep a family safe together [with] more reunifications. It’s time to invest in the solutions that work—supporting families and keeping them strong and together. https://lnkd.in/gkjkeyZ4

Don't forget amidst the Tuesday-morning quarterbacking around Cyber Monday--it's #givingtuesday today! During these times, there are any number of very worthy causes to which you can donate -- from finding a cure for chronic disease like Alzheimer's or cancer, to ensuring children in your local community don't go to bed hungry. One issue that is always top of my mind and close to my heart is affordable housing for older adults. Managed care and private pay is expensive. Sometimes moving in with adult children or relatives isn't always an option. While it's important to continue to discuss and advocate for macro solutions to these issues -- like a tax credit for informal and family caregivers -- simply giving to an organization that provides affordable housing to older adults helps with the situation at hand. To that end, please consider Chicago Methodist Senior Services for Giving Tuesday today. They operate multiple low-income apartments for older adults in North Chicago, and they are among the most mission-driven, caring people I have ever met. You can read more about their affordable housing here: https://lnkd.in/gPVj6jV3 You can donate here: https://lnkd.in/g7s84ezW Remember, getting older is the best case scenario for all of us, so it's up to all of us to take care of those who are aging now.

#Accessibility, #Inclusion and #Equity in emergency management require planning for the diverse needs of community members, including individuals living with disabilities. The Office of Grants and Research is committed to helping meet these needs through the state and federally funded grant programs we manage. We’re grateful to our partners at the #WesternMass Regional #HomelandSecurity Advisory Council, who used FEMA funding awarded by OGR to complete Equity in Emergency Management reports for Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire counties, and each of the cities and towns in the region. NEW RELEASE: SchoolHouse Connection released today a report that calls for urgent action as schools are running out of time to use federal pandemic-era funds dedicated to helping #homeless students. While the pandemic is over, the crisis of #homelessness is unabated and growing. Specifically, our report urges Congress to extend ARP-HCY obligation deadline by at least one school year to ensure that 100% of funds are used strategically to support the surging increase of our already 1.2M+ students experiencing #homelessness.
