Remote work is a permanent shift. The improved access to technology and lower costs make remote work much simpler. But it’s not just about avoiding office rent. It's about: → Significantly lowering employee stress → Tapping into a worldwide talent pool → No enduring hours of traffic jams → More quality time with family for employees → Complete freedom in choosing your work location. Now you might wonder, "What about communication?” Simple: Slack and Loom effortlessly fill those gaps. An occasional Zoom meeting and our connection is as strong as it would be in a physical space. So, what's the outcome? You will have a team that's not only skilled but also happy. A team that's concentrated, not stressed. In return, they enjoy the liberty to live their lives while excelling at their jobs. Believe me— Good work is achievable anywhere. And, based on my experience, it's most probable when people are in a place they desire.* It's the way work should be.

12 months ago, I got absolutely ripped to shreds on LinkedIn for saying I was against remote work. I've reflected since then and my opinion has changed... but is that allowed? The internet is very anti-people-changing-their-mind. Once you've posted an opinion, that's it. It's out there. And you're not allowed to change it or you'll be called a hypocrite. But that's not how humans work. I used to think remote work was ruining the ability for people to collaborate effectively. Especially for recruiters like me who do best when we're out and about, relationship-building with real people in real life. I had a black-and-white opinion that I hadn't properly reflected on and although we always offered flexibility here, giving it a label felt a step too far. That's exactly what the pandemic did to the conversation about remote work -> it made it black-and-white. So, when I did some reflecting (partially thanks to some angry Texans who commented on my LinkedIn ??), I remembered an employee of mine from 17 years ago who worked from Cornwall and came to the office via Skype. We've always offered that flexibility. I was talking out of my arse when I said I was 100% against remote work. Or rather, the answer was more complicated than I originally thought. I won't make remote work the default at McCarthy Recruitment because I believe there's real power in being together in an office environment. But will I happily arrange a hybrid agreement if you have a specific reason to work from home? Absolutely. Nobody's perfect and we can change our minds. Right? ??

Remote work benefits employers MORE than employees. But employers still say 'no'. It's easy to FAKE productivity in an office. People can look busy sitting at their desks... Drifting between random meetings... Chatting by the coffee machine. Someone could arrive at the office early. People automatically assume they're a top performer. Based on 0 proof. But with remote work... People HAVE to get results! Their output is the only thing bosses see. So there is nowhere to hide. This is why remote work is effective. 1. Employees get autonomy, control & flexibility 2. Bosses see better performance from people It's simple. Remote work serves everyone.

If your working remotely it's in your best interest to put a real effort into building connections which despite the negative press can and is being done. Let's not kid ourselves, remote work has been around for decades, just ask anyone who's communicated with colleagues in different offices across the world - somehow they managed and so can you. Here's a few tips to start today 1. Turn on your camera! There's no better way to get to know someone than by seeing them, focusing vs. multi tasking, watching body language and kind of "being in person" 2. Participate in company chat groups. Give a thumbs up for someone getting credit for something. Make a comment, contribute... 3. Small talk is good. Ask personal questions and share your own, mix some business with pleasure. This is how relationships start and grow. It's really not that complicated, maybe a bit uncomfortable for some, but worth the effort if you want to work remote and be successful. #remotework

Some food for thought: How do I make working remotely less lonely? Not another one of those run-if-the-interviewer-mentions-the-company-is-like-a-family post, but with an interesting twist instead: Working remote means HR does not pick your friends. Switching jobs or retiring becomes stressful because of losing social connections. Remote working requires you to think and act before any of those sharp cuts happen.

A FEW THOUGHTS ON REMOTE WORK... Remote work is another opportunity for employees to learn what works and what doesn't for each of them and have productive conversations with their employers. Employers are smart to listen to each employee and work together to create a win/win. If a business leader has evidence that an employee isn't pulling their weight working remotely or it's not a good fit with the job description, yes, please have that conversation, out of fairness to all. However, employers who assume employees won't be productive working remotely and are not aware of ALL the wellness benefits of remote work are shooting themselves in the foot and are doing no favors to their organization. The leaders who tend to have the most issues with remote work are the micromanagers. (And leaders who are bullies certainly will not embrace remote work.) https://lnkd.in/eutkth9q

Embracing Productivity Over Pretense: The Liberation of Remote Work In the traditional office setting, the art of "acting busy" has long been ingrained in the corporate culture. Employees often find themselves tethered to their desks long after completing their tasks, engaging in idle busyness to fill the time until the clock strikes closing hour. This facade of productivity, fueled by the need to appear constantly engaged, has become a norm in many workplaces. However, the rise of remote work has shattered this facade, ushering in an era where the emphasis is placed squarely on productivity and results rather than the illusion of busyness. One of the most liberating aspects of remote work is the freedom it affords individuals to structure their day based on their own productivity rhythms. With the absence of the physical office environment, employees are no longer constrained by the need to clock in a certain number of hours at their desks. Instead, they are empowered to complete their tasks efficiently and effectively, irrespective of the time of day. Whether it takes three hours or eight hours to accomplish their responsibilities, what matters most is the quality of their output, not the duration of their desk occupancy. This newfound flexibility not only eliminates the need for employees to engage in the charade of busyness but also allows them to reclaim their time and autonomy. LWhether it's pursuing a passion project, engaging in skill development, or simply taking a well-deserved break, remote work empowers individuals to make deliberate choices about how they utilize their time. By focusing on outcomes rather than mere presence, companies can foster a culture of accountability and trust within their teams. When employees are evaluated based on the results they deliver rather than the hours they clock, it incentivizes efficiency, innovation, and collaboration. Moreover, remote work enables companies to tap into a global talent pool, transcending geographical barriers and fostering diversity and inclusion. The truth is that productivity is not contingent upon physical proximity or constant supervision. With the advent of digital tools and project management platforms, managers can easily track progress, communicate expectations, and provide feedback in real-time, regardless of the physical location of their team members. By embracing a results-oriented approach to remote work, organizations can cultivate a culture of transparency and performance-driven accountability. In essence, remote work represents a paradigm shift in how we perceive and prioritize productivity in the modern workplace. As we continue to navigate the evolving landscape of work in the digital age, let us embrace the principles of productivity over pretense, recognizing that true success is measured not by how busy we appear, but by the impact we make. Do you agree?

Remote work makes "acting busy" unnecessary. Because office work often goes like this: → Hanging around your desk even when you're done working → Filling time with busywork because you're "on the clock" → Worrying about constantly looking busy But remote work makes all that irrelevant. Finish your work in a 3-4 hours? Great, log off— Do what you want instead of pretending to work for the rest of the day. And believe me, it’s a win-win for everyone: Employees: you can focus on real work, not just the appearance of it. As long as you’re producing, your company’s getting what they paid for. Companies: you get to focus on what really matters—results. I don’t like paying for wasted time, either... Remote work focuses on actual results. Because measuring productivity by desk time is outdated. If your team is getting the work done, then they're doing their job. Period. Remote work strips away the silly routine of acting busy— And just leaves the work and the results. That's good for business — and good for mental health, too.
