Spring break season is upon us. Are you planning on taking any time off? In a Harvard Business Review article, “How Taking a Vacation Improves Your Well-Being,” Rebecca Zucker explains the personal and professional benefits of time off to one’s mind, body, and soul. She writes, “An Ernst & Young study showed that for every additional 10 hours of vacation time that employees took, their year-end performance improved 8%... Similarly, in another company’s experiment with taking mandatory vacation time, there were clear increases in creativity, happiness (mood), and productivity… When we bring our authentic selves back to work [after vacation], we are more likely to shed our protective veneers, which includes not wasting energy or resources on hiding our inadequacies, so we can redirect them to the work at hand.” When spending your days trying to solve large problems – such as building data-informed, people-centered solutions for a more fair and effective justice system – it’s important to build in time and routines to recharge and refresh.
