Happy National Women's Equality Day! ???? Today marks the anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment, which granted women the right to vote. Perhaps it was naive and short-sighted to designate it Women's Equality Day. Though the 19th Amendment ostensibly granted all women the right to vote, in practice white women were the main beneficiaries. Black women, Native American women, Asian American women, and women from other racial and ethnic minority groups were discriminated against for 45 more years until the passage of The Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA). And, of course, there are many other ways women still aren’t equal, including the pay gap, bodily autonomy, and underrepresentation in positions of power. Women’s rights are notoriously weak where we're politically underrepresented, and our country?lags behind 68 others?in women’s political representation in national legislatures. Last year American women held only?29 percent?of seats in Congress. At the state level, women hold only?32.6 percent?of state legislative seats. In the courts, women make up only one third of?federal judges?and?state court judges. It makes good sense to have female representation in politics and in business. Research by Boston Consulting Group shows that companies founded or co-founded by women receive around half the investment of male-founded firms, yet they generate higher revenues and deliver about double the return on investment. Additionally, women-owned firms in the U.S. contribute nearly $3 trillion to the economy, according to the World Bank. #WomensEqualityDay #VotingRights
