State of the Art: Brent Cho (ACT, ‘27) and Ellie Yoshino (BCD, ‘27) created a nonprofit organization called B.E. Partners in Art. The organization’s goal is to spread the love of art to communities and children who have limited art opportunities due to disabilities or economic difficulties. Brent and Ellie partnered with Beyond Blindness, a long-time pioneer in education for children with disabilities, to run a few summer camps and are planning future art activities.

Learning from the Black Church: A Philanthropic Perspective Black churches have long been vital in addressing social inequities, serving as both spiritual leaders and pillars of community support. A recent article from the Lake Institute on Faith & Giving, The Black Church as a Viable Intermediary, highlights their role as key philanthropic intermediaries—bridging gaps and responding to needs often overlooked by traditional systems. For Christian philanthropists, this article offers powerful insights into how we might rethink our approaches to partnership, trust, and resource allocation. I encourage you to take a moment to read it here. As I reflect on how we can engage with these ideas, I’d love to share this with others in the philanthropic and faith-based space. Organizations like Aslan Housing Foundation, Sojourners, Glide Memorial Church, Transforming The Bay for Christ, and Leadership Education at Duke Divinity—what do you think about this perspective? Let’s keep learning and growing together in service of God’s call to justice and equity.

Thank you Erin Hill, CPA, MBA and JD and Lauren Cranston for inviting me out to Greenwich, Connecticut last night, to talk to the Greenwich chapter of the National League Of Young Men, Inc. (NLYM) about how to make love, not p**n. It was an honor to talk to this terrific group of 14-18 y/o high school boys (plus those who couldn't make it to the talk, but joined us remotely via zoom) about MakeLoveNotPorn and the importance of operating good sexual values and behavior in their own lives. I appreciated the fact that moms Erin and Lauren introduced me, shut the doors and left us to ensure a safe and confidential space - following my presentation we had a really great, free and frank Q&A session. I must admit, I wasn't aware of the National League of Young Men until I received this invitation, and I love their mission as 'a non-profit organization for young men in grades 9-12; this structured program for mothers and their sons promotes the development of young men into community leaders through leadership involvement, charitable and community service, cultural experiences, and protocol education.' Everything we talked about last night was absolutely in line with NLYM's mission of providing young men with the life skills they need to become adult community leaders. I think you'll like this, Scott Galloway ??

The 5 Ts of Philanthropy – Time, Talent, Treasure, Testimony and (social) Ties – offer so many ways Black communities can strengthen and build community assets and resources. "Philanthropy is not a transaction,” says Karen McNeil-Miller, president and CEO of?The Colorado Health Foundation. “In order for change to happen, there needs to be engagement and dialogue, which helps bring a strategic focus on how we can make a collective impact. The Black community has a long history of philanthropy that comes from resilience and optimism – because you can't have one without the other." Have you decided how you’ll use your 5 Ts this year to create the change you want to see? Learn more - bricfund.org/get-involved #5Ts?#GivingBlack?#BRICbyBRIC #BlackPhilanthropy?#BRICFundCO

This year marks 157 years of #Juneteenth. AFN honors and celebrates this important day through our continued efforts to eliminate systemic racism and racial bias in all aspects of life. Acknowledging that #philanthropy and its grantees can unintentionally perpetuate systemic racism and implicit bias, AFN supports our members and partners in actively addressing racial bias in the philanthropic sector with Realizing Economic Justice (REJ), AFN's platform for a series of activities, educational offerings and programming. REJ presents funding strategies and philanthropic practices that members can use to confront and address racial bias in economic security and asset-building philanthropy. Check out Realizing Economic Justice and all it offers: https://loom.ly/UqlhHKw
