All this new terminology, got to keep up with the lingo ?? "1. THE GREAT BRAND-ERTAINMENT.? Brands are acting like entertainment entities to insert themselves into culture and cater to consumers’ content interests. A shift to long-form storytelling in advertising ensues as brands echo narrative arcs and entertainment genres relevant to their audiences.? Examples:? Loewe?created an 80s film,?Decades of Confusion,?starring Dan Levy and Aubrey Plaza, showcasing its latest collection of the era’s styling tropes.? E.L.F. BEAUTY?made a true-crime parody,?Cosmetic Criminals, and distributed it as a trailer at movie theaters.? Labucq?did an Instagram takeover where a creator posted short-story spoofs surrounding the brand’s shoes that could’ve been a promo for a Lifetime movie.?"

For those of us who create original series, when Amazon Studios bought Mr. Beast's reality show "Beast Games" for an unprecedented $100 million dollars, there were rumblings - "Why on earth would Amazon spend that much on a single show?! " "Was content creation the new way of just [insert content creator here], add Studio Dev Execs to build up their concept and toss in a ton of money = a new hit show??" Nope. I'm not denying content creators. What I am questioning is if they understand anything outside of their YouTube box?? The systems, the protocol, the way we work in Film and TV is there for a reason. Even with solid rules in place, when you're working on a great set, filmmaking can be incredibly collaborative and awesome. But if you're working with any level of corruption, it can plain suck too. I've had experience in both. I think actor, Mair Mulroney (who previously appeared on the popular channel run by YouTuber Dhar Mann) from a recent NBC News article put it best - “It’s the wild, wild west, really and truly. At the same time,” she said, “I think when something is starting to operate as a studio, if a channel is starting to operate that way and then they’re hiring full-blown productions, I do think that at that point you’ve stepped onto a different level.” Yes, a "different level" - a much different level - it's called Film and TV production. What are your thoughts?

Bridgerton: Chick Flick or Branding Genius? (Maybe Both?) I may not be Bridgertons’ biggest fan. But I truly appreciate what the creators did brand-wise. Regency romance/drama is a familiar concept. We've seen Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and many others, in more than one remake. They are mostly alike. ??The language and stereotypical conversations. ??The shallow characters, the ball dancing.? ??The courtship of the unlikely couple. When creating another piece in this genre, everyone would know what to expect. But the creators of Bridgerton proved us wrong. ??First: the mix of skin colors and origins of the characters. (Historical nonsense?)? ??Second: the string quartet playing popular songs. (Taylor Swift and Maroon 5?)? ??Third: the dresses and hairdos that just can't keep us calm. (How are they pulling it off?) Is it a deliberately ignorant choice or a bold BRAND STRATEGY? The latter, indeed. With the third season streaming, the Bridgertons’ brand is as strong as ever. Walk into the room at any moment during the show, and you immediately know what you're watching. As per 45.05 million views worldwide on the opening weekend, its popularity among the audience seems to be rising. Countless memes have been created, and several TikTok trends have emerged. Seeing people wearing random household items as wigs or dressing up and speaking increasingly more Bridgerton-appropriate while watching the show just makes one wanna participate. So is it the great story that makes people do this? Not exactly. It's the BRAND. Brand that made a bold move at the beginning and stuck to it. A brand that is different, recognizable and consistent at any given moment.? So pardon me, esteemed company. The much-anticipated continuation of Bridgerton's third season graces Netflix at any moment. I must take my leave to partake in a pot of English tea. Amid the many movies that showed at the Sundance Film Festival, “Sue Bird: In the Clutch” stood out. The documentary, which focuses on the career and activism of the WNBA legend, was backed by Waffle Iron Entertainment, Nike’s production arm. (Nike’s first pair of running shoes were famously inspired by waffles.) The doc will air on Netflix in the US and Canada and is still looking for a theatrical release. It’s the latest example of a movie backed by a brand. That includes megahits like Barbie that are based on brand IP, but there are many more companies supporting stories that are adjacent to their brand. John Deere, for example, backed a documentary about Black farmers. Everyone from beer giant AB InBev to outdoors favorite REI is getting in on the action, working with top-notch producers, and in some cases winning awards. “The Long Goodbye,” a short film starring Riz Ahmed commissioned by the digital arts platform of WeTransfer, won an Academy Award in 2022. For the Nikes of the world, it’s a way to support stories that connect with target customers. For the producers and talent, it’s a welcome opportunity as streaming giants pull back on funding originals and linear TV continues to struggle. For viewers? We’ll have to watch to find out.
