While it’s often assumed that such behavior is more common in underprivileged or uneducated sections of society, the harsh reality is that educated and accomplished individuals can also perpetuate abuse. Educated women are not exempt from becoming victims. This highlights a systemic issue that demands attention and action at every level of society. Addressing violence against women requires a collective effort, education on equality, empowering women to speak up, and holding perpetrators accountable, regardless of their background. International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women! Violence against women and girls remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations worldwide. In Pakistan, an estimated 34% of women aged 15-49 have experienced physical or emotional violence, while 1 in 3 women globally face gender-based violence in their lifetime. This year, on November 25th, 2024, Pakistan Alliance for Girls Education (PAGE) stands united with the global movement to UNiTE to End Violence Against Women. Violence is not only a violation of basic human rights but also a barrier to achieving equality, development, and peace. At PAGE, we believe that education is a powerful tool to break the cycle of violence. Almost one in three women have been subjected to physical and/or sexual intimate partner violence, non-partner sexual violence, or both, at least once in their life. ? Gender-based violence isn't just another statistic - is a reality that affects women at all stages of their life, including education, employment, and opportunities. ?? Some women and girls, such as those in vulnerable situations or humanitarian crises, migrants, LGTBI, indigenous people or those with disabilities, face greater risk. Back in college, I chose to focus my grade thesis on the topic of eliminating violence against women. This wasn't just an academic choice - it was personal. Through every life change and professional decision I've made since then, one purpose has remained constant: being a platform to drive initiatives that protect and empower women. ???? 16 days of activism against gender-based violence-Wajood Society In Pakistan, #transwomen face alarming levels of gender-based violence, rooted in deep-seated stigma and societal discrimination. Despite the legal recognition granted by the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2018, the lived reality for many trans women remains one of marginalization, harassment, and fear. They are subjected to physical abuse, verbal assaults, and even fatal violence, often with little to no accountability for perpetrators. Beyond physical harm, trans women endure social exclusion, barriers to education, and limited access to healthcare and employment, perpetuating cycles of poverty and vulnerability. Addressing this issue requires more than just laws—it demands a cultural shift. We must stand in solidarity, amplify their voices, challenge societal norms, and work collectively to create an environment of respect, safety, and equality for trans women. Every individual deserves to live with dignity and free from violence, and it is our shared responsibility to make that a reality. ?
