Waymo (owned by behemoth Alphabet Inc.) has grown from 100k to 150k weekly paid trips over the past 2 months. Although only a super tiny fraction of all car trips globally (several tens of billions), the annual growth rate is massive (~700%) and they’re doing promising partnerships with both platforms (Uber) and car makers (Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Volvo Cars, etc.). In just a few years, they’ll likely have millions of weekly trips. As will other autonomous mobility providers (Tesla, Amazon, etc.). Both the S-curve adoption rate of autonomy and the economic ripple effect will be so much stronger than most people think. Part of the reason will be that a lot of folks want to skip personal car ownership as they don’t ”have to” own a car anymore, it’ll become a streaming service. Also because cars (vans) will become mobile shopping stores with much better cost-efficiency and higher revenues vs. regular stores, and enable the sharing economy (which currently is not working). Autonomy is a big deal, as it could completely redraw both mobility and retail from their cores. Alphabet seems quite well positioned. _ #Waymo #autonomousvehicles

(reduce road deaths caused by human error/improve road safety and mobility; reclaim time wasted in traffic; make everyday destinations accessible for people who can’t drive.) ?? Waymo's Growth: Hitting 150k paid rides (and 1M fully autonomous miles) A WEEK! (Remember, Waymo already doubled its trips to 100k per week in just over three months in August.) ??? Service Expansion: Expanded service areas in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. And importantly, curbside service at Sky Harbor International Airport. ?? ?? Safety Record: Waymo Driver was **3.5 times better at avoiding crashes causing injuries** and **3 times better at avoiding police-reported crashes** compared to human drivers. ?? Released its 6th-generation Waymo Driver system, which is cheaper, faster to develop, and handles extreme weather better. Future Plans: ?? In an interesting partnership with Uber, Waymo plans to serve riders in Austin and Atlanta starting in 2025. ?? Adding to the 700 Jaguar iPace cars, Waymo is testing Zeekr custom-designed robotaxis in California.

Autonomous Driving - Robotaxi & more (1/3) Some brief insights from recent research excursions in China and in the US. ??Waymo in San Francisco ??@Alphabet’s Waymo operates commercially in 4 cities with more than 50,000 paid autonomous rides weekly. ??In SF alone a lot of Waymo Taxis are operating and they seem to gain more and more public acceptance as more and more riders get used to it. ?? We made some real life experience tests of Waymo to analyse the progress. And we were quite impressed of the good user experience of the customer journey. (See video clip) ??The Robotaxi (w/o a safety driver) managed very difficult traffic situations with practically no difference to a human driver ??Our Waymo taxi even realized that a car on a traffic light mistakingly wanted to pull back: Waymo instantly blowed the horn and also pulled back taking rear traffic into account! ?? ??Our take: Scaling of the robotaxi service will be key and not easy. Operating the robotaxis is still very expensive and there might be still some edge cases leading to severe accidents and political resistance. First Time Riding with Waymo: An Impressive Experience! ?? I had the opportunity to use Waymo for the first time today in Phoenix, AZ., and I have to say, it was quite an impressive experience! From the moment I entered the vehicle, I could see how far autonomous driving technology has come. A few highlights from my ride: Seamless Experience: The transition to a self-driving car was smooth and effortless. The car handled traffic, turns, and stops with remarkable precision. Safety and Comfort: The vehicle's advanced safety features and smooth ride made for a comfortable journey. It’s clear that a lot of thought has gone into ensuring passenger safety and comfort. Tech-Savvy Ride: The onboard technology was intuitive and user-friendly, adding to the overall ease of the trip without being overwhelming. It’s exciting to see how technologies like Waymo are making daily commutes more convenient and paving the way for the future of transportation. The company announced on social media on Monday that the company's employees can take trips using freeways, following successful tests in Arizona. "After successful testing of our autonomous vehicles on Phoenix freeways, we're expanding our operations. Starting today, our employees will also have access to fully autonomous rides on San Francisco freeways," Waymo posted on X (formerly Twitter). Last week, Waymo announced the company would begin offering robotaxi rides beyond San Francisco to the Peninsula communities of Daly City, Broadmoor and Colma. In total, the company covers 55 square miles in the region. The move has been met with some opposition to leaders in San Mateo County, who said Waymo gave them little notice. Leaders on the Peninsula are backing a measure that would let local governments regulate autonomous vehicles. The company did not say when freeway trips would be offered to the public. CBS News Bay Area has reached out to Waymo for comment.

While visiting the city of technology, we had to try Waymo’s autonomous driving car. It was an exciting and futuristic way to explore San Francisco! ?? On the begining it was crazy unused experience, especialy when you realize that there is no driver siting next to you and the stearing wheel is moving by its self ?? ?? But after 5 minutes, you do feel safe. They do a good effort in explaining you what to touch and what not and you are in charge when driving starts, so you won’t forget friends;) It was a fun mobility experience, perfect for anyone visiting or just curious about the future of transportation. Is driverless car the future of transportation? I just had to ride with Waymo while I was visiting San Francisco! What a futuristic and unique experience – quiet and smooth. I wasn’t scared; quite the opposite – it felt safe ??. I would definitely take it again! A few facts about Waymo: Waymo is the world’s first fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and my first time trying it was unforgettable. The company has been around since 2017, and now operates in cities like Phoenix, LA, and San Francisco. They handle over 10,000 rides per week! There’s no driver, so no chit-chat, but you can see what the car "sees" on the screen in front of you. It was incredible watching it navigate the busy streets with ease.
