Now, more than ever, our water community is seeing the costly impact of what can happen when we don't protect our source water (or we don't know what to protect it from). Join me in observing #SourceWaterProtectionWeek this week! Do you know where your water comes from and what you can do to #ProtectTheSource? Here's a few places you can check to find out: ? Your water utility's website - many websites feature great writeups on where their water comes from and the treatment. ? Your annual water quality report (delivered between January and the end of June typically for the previous year) ? Call your water utility! If you don't know and can't easily find it, never be afraid to ask!

These challenges demand improved policies, innovative technologies, and increased public-private partnerships. Governments, businesses, and civil society must work collaboratively to invest in resilient infrastructure, implement sustainable water management practices, and enhance public awareness about the value of water. A paradigm shift is needed where water is seen not as a cheap commodity but as an essential, limited resource that requires active, long-term stewardship and investment.?

I was really happy to see these policy suggestions from Waterwise. It's certainly a step in the right direction but I'm surprised to see that #LeakyLoos didn't make an appearance in the suggestions. Water scarcity is a growing concern in the UK, and a significant contributor is leaky loos. Surely a simple policy ask is that we tackle this issue at its source: the manufacturers. A leaky loo is often caused by faulty components such as the flapper, fill valve, or flush valve. A common culprit is the ball valve system, which can stick and allow water to continuously flow into the bowl. Modern fill valves are less prone to sticking and leaking compared to traditional ball valves. To make a real impact, we should mandate that all new toilets sold and installed must move away from the outdated ball valve system, which is prone to sticking and causing substantial water waste. By innovating toilet design, we can significantly reduce water loss and promote sustainability, taking a vital step toward conserving our precious water resources and ensuring a sustainable future. #WaterConservation #Sustainability #Innovation #WaterEfficiency #Leakage

Let’s examine water company responses to yesterday’s catastrophic sewage discharge data………here’s South West Water’s………….let’s debunk some of their claims……….. These are Facts based on the Environment Agency report…… Only 12% of their discharges were due to “exceptional weather”, so minimal impact from severe weather in reality. 88% of their discharges were due to other reasons that are in breach of Section 94 of The Water Industries Act. The ambition of “less than 10 spills per overflow per year” is currently a long way off, the average number of spills per overflow in 2023 was 43.4! The Environment Agency report confirming these facts is included in the comments below, see how your water company performed. #sewagescandal #sickofsewage
