?? Lettuce compost our lettuce ?? #nationalcompostweek On today’s episode of Cartside ?? Convos, we are asking Jimbo’s shoppers how long they think a head of lettuce could take to break down in a landfill. It could take up to 25 years for a head of lettuce to break down in a landfill. It’s scary to think that there are heads of lettuce in the landfill older than some of our @jimbosnaturally shoppers ?? Not only does sending our lovely lettuce leftovers to landfill cause us to miss out on their post life nutrients, but what would be a simple decomposition process via compost, instead could take 300x or more time to break down while maintaining their emission of methane UNTIL fully broken down. Alternatively, a head of lettuce that is composted either in backyard, commercially or municipally will break down much quicker (think weeks or months). ? So the best thing we can do to help mitigate them green house gasses and to utilize those good good nutrients is keep our food waste out of the landfills. Find new ways to gift it to our tummies or return it to our soil so that we may grow more ?? ?? *Disclaimer* Waste practices can vary commercially and by incorporated and incorporated towns, townships, cities, counties & states. That’s what makes this whole waste industry thing so gosh darn silly. However waste collection and disposal tend to be improving all the time ?? Please check with your local haulers for current accepted waste practices! We at Waste Wise & Allgoods Nonprofit, take pride in researching and verifying factual information to the best of our ability. If we have made an error, please reach out and provide your credible source. We will be happy to correct errors, if any. FOOD ISN'T TRASH!!! We are launching 20 COMMUNITY FOOD SCRAP DROP-OFF sites in Central Oklahoma. This is your chance to vote on where these sites will be located! WHAT is composting? Composting is the controlled decay of organic materials, like food scraps. The goal is to create compost, a dark, crumbly, earthy-smelling soil amendment that adds nutrients to the soil. WHY is composting important? By adding your food scraps to the drop-off bin, you are reducing waste, cutting methane emissions from landfills, improving our soil, lessening soil erosion, and conserving water if you choose to add completed compost to your yard or garden, which we recommend. WHO can use these drop-off sites? These Community Food Scrap Drop-Off Sites will be open to the public for FREE for the next two years. All you have to do is scan the QR code on the sign at your drop-off location, watch a short video about what can and cannot go in the bin, take a short quiz to check your understanding, and then you will receive a combination code to open the bin (you only need to do this once). WHEN will we be able to use the drop-off sites? The goal is to start collection in September, but you have only until July 12 to vote for drop-off site locations. If you have any questions about the pilot program, you can contact [email protected]. Share this post to spread the word about this FREE pilot program! Cast your vote at https://lnkd.in/ggk4MH8s

Today is National Learn About Composting Day! ?? Composting is an easy way to reduce waste and create nutrient-rich soil for your garden. Get the whole family involved by starting a compost bin in your backyard or kitchen. Here are some tips for getting your kids involved: ??? Start Small with a Compost Bin Get a small compost bin or even a large plastic container with a lid and some holes poked in the sides. This will make it easy for kids to add their food scraps and watch the composting process happen right in the kitchen or backyard. Decorate the bin with their name or fun stickers to make it their own. ?? Learn What to Compost Make a game of learning what items can go in the compost bin. Generally, fruit and veggie scraps, eggshells, coffee grounds, and torn up paper or cardboard can be composted. Have kids help collect these items and toss them in their special bin. ???? Get Hands-On with the Compost Once there are some materials decomposing in the bin, let kids get their hands dirty! They can use a trowel to mix and aerate the compost. This helps introduce oxygen which is key for the breakdown process. It's also fun for kids to search for creepy crawlies like worms and sow bugs that help consume the waste. #NationalLearnAboutCompostingDay #CompostingTips #ReduceReuseRecycle #GreenLiving #HandsOnLearning #LearnAboutCompostingDay #CompostingDay #StephenRitz #ZeroWaste #SustainableLiving #GreenBronxMachine

?? Price Farms Organics Celebrates Successful Completion of USDA-NRCS Compost & Food Waste Reduction Program! ?? We are thrilled to announce the successful completion of our USDA-NRCS Compost & Food Waste Reduction Program in partnership with the Ohio Federation of Soil and Water Conservation Districts. Through this initiative, we distributed a total of 2,540 cubic yards of our nutrient-rich ZooBrew compost to 126 organizations across Ohio, including non-profits, schools, urban farms, and community gardens. The production of that compost diverted over 3 million pounds of organic material from landfills, including 1 million pounds of food scraps and food production byproducts alone! We estimate that this program impacted over 10,000 individuals, from volunteers to community organizers to people in need. This program not only supported local, sustainable agriculture but also fostered community engagement and education on composting and gardening. We are proud to contribute to a greener, healthier Ohio! Thank you to all our partners and recipients for making this program a success. Together, we are making a positive impact on our environment and communities. Stay tuned for more updates on our continued efforts to promote sustainability and local food production. 2011 was when we independently started managing our poultry farm, we had this sudden challenge on how to manage our waste from our flock. It was a 6000 capacity farm. It was sudden because we never had the experience of that volume. So our first attempt was to hire some casual workers to help evacuate the waste. I remember we paid 20k back then after a week of pilled up waste. Four days after we were back to where we were and had to bring put another 20k. This time, it was clear this wouldnt be sustainable so we decided to flush them out and allow the vegetation behind drain and seive. Fast forward to some years after, another farm had similar challenges but they couldnt flush due to the poorly constructed pen so they had to hire waste excavators (Kogbe kogbe) they had to pay about 120k every week or so... Sooo you see these picture below with the truck, bikes and bags are evidence of trade in the same waste that we paid to take out. This same waste is what this trailer load is there to pick up... There are over 500bags of this and each bag goes for.... Looooool i wouldnt mention but you see eeehn, Information/ Enlightment is power... There are more things that breaks our backs, bank and emotion that if only we knew, could be our liberation from the same challenge we cry for...The same happened with our Rams and cassava peels... Story for another day. Anyway said all these to encourage us to have inside eyes in our environment (Oju Inu) theres more to what we can transform that we dont see. Pray: May God open our eyes to the products in our comminity. Cheers!
