Washougal High School students in the Career & Technical Education?Construction?Technology program applied?construction?skills learned in the classroom to build two prop rooms for a?fire?safety demonstration by the Camas-Washougal?Fire?Department. On September 23, the?fire?department set both prop rooms ablaze to demonstrate the effectiveness of residential sprinklers at the Health & Safety Fair Open House. Over 2500 spectators attended the open house. “The students came with all levels of experience and gained skills working as a team on a real?construction?project,” said Ron Schumacher,?Fire?Marshal at the Camas-Washougal?Fire?Department. “They’re practicing installing drywall and using?construction?tools in high school.” Eleventh grade students Gage Leavitt, Gavan McCallister, and Noah Wheeler?constructed?the two prop rooms after school on Wednesday, September 20. “Our aim is to create opportunities for student leadership. This team of students had to overcome some challenges in order to finish these projects,” said Brent Mansell, Woods Technology teacher at Washougal High School. “Opportunities for real world application of classroom-learned skills with businesses in our community are invaluable. When our students realize that their skills are valued and can be applied to specific jobs, they gain confidence and get that much closer to decisions on their post high school career goals. They also see the results of their effort in our community,” Margaret Rice, Director of Career and Technical Education shared. The Camas-Washougal?Fire?Department equipped one prop room with a residential sprinkler, while the other prop room was unequipped with this?fire?suppression measure. During the demonstration, the prop room with a sprinkler installed sustained much less?fire?damage than the second room. Sprinklers are not designed to suppress all?fires, but help to create a safety corridor so that occupants can evacuate. The?fire?department should always be notified in?fire?emergencies by calling 9-1-1. The Camas-Washougal?Fire?Department began hosting the annual Health & Safety Fair Open House in 2001. This is the first year that Washougal High School students are involved in?constructing?the prop rooms for the community event. “We hope to do this again next year,” said Mansell.

Getting Kids Engaged in and Informed About Building Safety The future of building safety lies with the next generation, and that means there’s no better time than now to get kids involved in the industry. Pete Roque and Rachel Patterson share their tips for informing and educating kids about building safety. The future of building safety lies with the?next generation, and that means there’s no better time than now to get kids involved in the industry. But before they can understand?why?they should pursue a career in this industry, they must first become engaged with building safety and learn why it is an essential part of our world. Pete Roque, Director of Code Enforcement at?4LEAF, and Rachel Patterson, Senior Code Enforcement Officer for the?City of Westminster, Colorado and Secretary of the International Code Council Colorado Chapter, are tackling this challenge from multiple angles. First and foremost, both Roque and Patterson speak to students whenever they can to inform and educate kids about building safety. “I don’t think kids recognize they live in a structure,” said Roque. “You ask them, ‘Do you know how buildings are built?’ Most of them don’t know. I explain that if it’s built the wrong way, it can fall apart while they’re sleeping. [That gets their attention], they’re always like, ‘What!?’” Roque uses LEGO blocks to demonstrate the importance of following instructions. He relates that back to building codes, emphasizing that they have been crafted over many years to ensure the safety, integrity and reliability of every structure. Roque also passes out Junior Building Inspector stickers and hard hats provided by the Code Council during Building Safety Month. He even teamed up with his son, Luke, to write a children’s book:?Code Enforcement Officer Lucas Cleans Up Our Street. The book introduces young readers to code enforcement while providing insights into how blight and substandard structures are dealt with on a daily basis. Roque happily passes out his book at trainings and at seminars and asks that the recipients pay it forward by reading to a kid. Listen to the Code Council’s Kids and Building Safety podcast?here. “You know when you’re a little kid and the police officer or fireman comes to your school? We don’t have that for building safety,” said Roque. “With this book, we can teach kids about building safety and code enforcement at a young age.”

Potential overcrowding in education premises... for a period of up to 20 minutes every 60 minutes the building could be overcapacity in terms of its design. Fire engineers should consider the potential for increased capacity so that additional fire safety measures or increased escape widths could be built into the design. Implementing a program where oil companies, fire stations, police departments, and other organizations provide educational lectures to schools can be a valuable way to fill gaps in education while exposing students to various career options and real-world applications of their learning. By regulating visits for lectures about safety, law enforcement, fire safety, and other relevant topics, schools can enhance their curriculum and provide students with practical knowledge that extends beyond the classroom. Oil companies can offer insights into environmental conservation, energy production, and sustainability practices, helping students understand the importance of responsible resource management and the impact of energy consumption on the planet. Fire stations can educate students about fire safety protocols, emergency response procedures, and the role of firefighters in protecting communities. Police departments can provide lectures on law enforcement, crime prevention, and civic responsibility, fostering a sense of community engagement and respect for the law among students. These educational lectures not only supplement classroom learning but also expose students to potential career paths and opportunities in fields they may not have considered. By showcasing the diverse roles and responsibilities within these industries, students can gain a deeper understanding of the skills and qualifications required for various professions, sparking interest and curiosity about potential career options. To ensure widespread access and impact, these lectures can be organized to rotate among different schools on a monthly basis, with each organization hosting a lecture once a month throughout the academic year. This approach ensures that all students have the opportunity to benefit from these educational experiences over the course of their schooling, spreading awareness and knowledge across different communities and age groups. By incorporating real-world perspectives and practical applications into the educational curriculum, schools can enrich students' learning experiences and prepare them for future success in both academic and professional pursuits. Additionally, these initiatives foster collaboration between schools and community organizations, strengthening ties and promoting a culture of lifelong learning and engagement. Through these efforts, students can develop the skills, knowledge, and aspirations needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. #society #awareness
