In teaching my course on First in Company Officer and Scene Size Up, whether at the academy, or with seasoned veterans, I always start by asking the question "When Does Size Up Start"? Many believe it starts from when you arrive at the scene, other state it starts with the radio dispatch...but the correct answer is "it starts with knowing YOUR district". Pre incident analysis is vital to making accurate tactical decisions on the fire ground. Every agency should have a policy on company area familiarization and first-due district size up. This information aids in RPDM (Recognition Prime Decision Making), at a time of urgency giving us an additional tool to assist in making better choices. Under stress we won't just rise to the occasion...we will default to the level of our training and preparedness.

+++++++++++++++++++++ CAPTAIN’S LOG, San Diego date 10232024: After extensive exploration of the area, I found that unlike my time in Virginia, I couldn’t seem to discover any local life forms willing to engage in the ever-growing-in-popularity and noble sport of pickleball. Desperation mounted… until I had an epiphany: I’m the commanding officer, I can just order them to play. And so, a rigorous command physical training session was held on the pickleball court. The crew valiantly participated (because, well, they had no choice. And, see! they don’t look like they’re being held hostage at all!) Unfortunately, I still can’t order them to like me. Conclusion: Authority has its limits. But, it felt great to be back on the court again. +++++++++++++++++++++
