After more than a month in their #districts, Members of #Congress head back to #CapitolHill on Monday with a long to-do list and a time clock rapidly approaching zero. When Congress returns, they will have until September 30—13 #legislative days in the #House and 15 in the #Senate— to wrap up #unfinished business and avert a #governmentshutdown. It is presumed that Congress will pass a #ContinuingResolution (CR) that would extend current #funding levels into #November in order to avoid a government shutdown before the #elections. It is possible, though extremely unlikely, that both #chambers could pass their own individual funding bills and come to an #agreement to pass #conference bills before the #deadline. Given the future #control of each chamber and the #executive branch is uncertain, the #strategy is centered around the #outlook of the election. It is possible that the #TaxPackage will be brought back to the table during September, after it failed to clear a #procedural vote in the Senate just before recess began.?The #FarmBill is also up for discussion, but it seems unlikely that it will be addressed before October #recess. Barring a government shutdown, lawmakers are currently scheduled to leave D.C. on September 27 to campaign before the election; they will not return until November 12.?

Here's my post-election recap on what we know so far in the states. https://lnkd.in/df3fFyMU With an already substantial lead in state political power, Republicans successfully defended key legislative majorities and should add some legislative chambers back to their column after some setbacks during the 2022 election cycle. Republicans currently control 23 state trifectas (i.e., when a single political controls both chambers of the legislature and the governor’s mansion) and while they’re not likely to add to that number, this dominant trifecta map should mostly hold as we enter the 2025 legislative session.

Despite small changes in political control in states, there are a number of important story lines emerging from last night that could have major implications for your government relations strategy. Ask yourself this: Is your team ready for the 2025 state legislative session? If you answered: No, Maybe, somewhat ready, or 99% sure we're ready, then a better question is: How can MultiState help you achieve ALL of your state and local government relations goals?

To pass any spending bill, Speakers McCarthy and Johnson have relied on suspension of the rules and Democratic votes. This is NOT a sign of blossoming bipartisanship but a reflection of deep divides among House Republicans and their slim majority. #politics #gop #fiscalpolicy #election2024

We therefore believe the most likely outcome of the election is either a red sweep, where Republicans win the presidency and control both chambers of Congress, or a split government, where Democrats win the presidency and the lower chamber of Congress
Biden 2.0 or Trump 2.0?

#ArtificialIntelligence , the #ElectoralCollege and #RankedChoiceVoting (and more), oh my! Our team has been working hard to keep track of every #election related bill introduced in #statelegislatures , and my colleague Katy has a whirlwind tour of this year's enactments so far. I've found it most interesting to see state's approaches to #AI transparency in #campaign ads, and to watch states prepare for the Electoral Count Reform Act's new rules for the #2024presidentialelection. Check this short piece out for a rundown of these topics and more!
State lawmakers introduced unprecedented numbers of election bills in the last several years. In 2024, that pace has slowed—but only by a bit. As of Thursday last week, NCSL is tracking 2,017 bills introduced this year related to election administration, with 218 enactments so far. There were 2,917 bills introduced and 327 enacted in 2023.
