I am very glad to join the Executive Committee of the IPIFF (International Platform of Insects for Food and Feed), our insect producers' and users’ association that have done so much these last years for the development of the European insect sector. ? There is still a lot of work ahead for the next years : now that production is becoming a reality in Europe, we need a clearer and applicable regulation, for production, food and feed use, circularity including frass usage for the soils. We need also a clear view on the European market for this sustainable new source of proteins and how it takes place in our European sovereignty and in the green deal. We cannot continue to say “we need to develop more alternative sources of proteins for Europe” and continue to import massively without any environmental or regulatory constraints non sustainable sources of proteins from all over the world. I am really looking forward to work with my colleagues of the IPIFF Excom to strengthen and accelerate the development of this important sector for Europe.
Last week, IPIFF (International Platform of Insects for Food and Feed) held its General Assembly Meeting. The IPIFF constituents elected?Adriana Casillas, CEO of Spain-based Tebrio, insect industry leaders, as President for the second 3-year mandate. During the General Assembly meeting,?Frank van Sluis?(Protix) was re-elected as First Vice-President,?Antoine Hubert?(?nsect) as Second Vice-President, and?Heinrich Katz?(Hermetia Baruth GmbH) as IPIFF Treasurer of the EU-wide umbrella organisation. During the high-level meeting, Sophie Delplancke (Innovafeed), Christian B?rtsch (Essento Insect Food ? Making insects delicious), Daniel Murta (EntoGreen) and Sebastien Crepieux (Invers) were also appointed to the Executive Committee. Congratulations to all elected members! DF Biological Insecticide. ? “Putting on [DiPel] prior to hull split is absolutely essential,” Burkdoll explained regarding navel orangeworm management. “Once hull split has taken place, it’s too late. You can put it on at hull split, that’s a good thing. Around 2.5 billion tonnes of #food grown is #wasted each year, with around 1.2 billion tonnes of #food #lost on farms alone during, around and after harvest. This level of inefficiency has significant environmental and social impacts such as increasing food insecurity and water use. Furthermore, emissions associated with #foodlossandwaste (FLW) are estimated to account for approximately 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. SDGs 2 and 12; specifically, SDG12.3 aims to halve FLW globally by 2030. WBA’s Food and Agriculture Benchmark research shows that the average score of companies on the #FoodLossandWaste (FLW) indicator is 0.14 out of 1 ??. Reducing FLW is a powerful way to improve food systems and critical to delivering on the Paris Agreement and the Global Methane Pledge. On Tuesday, 30 July, we will launch our Collective Impact Coalition (CIC) on Food Loss and Waste with a group of multi-stakeholders who can influence companies to improve their performance on Food Loss and Waste by setting targets aligned with the SDG 12.3 agenda and measuring progress against it. CIC members take coordinated actions to incentivise key companies to improve their performance on Food Loss and Waste, and progress is measured over time using WBA’s Food and Agriculture Benchmark and annual progress reports. As the convenor for this coalition, we aim to co-create an action plan with CIC members. The event will feature a presentation of the CIC on Food Loss and Waste followed by a Q&A session with the participants. Excited to announce that the second paper from my dissertation has been published in Canadian Food Studies!! It’s called 'Optimizing stewardship of the land? Digital agriculture and the ideology of optimization in Canadian policy and media discourse.' In this paper, I analyze policy and media discourse to understand the ways that digital agricultural technologies fit into discourses of sustainable agriculture in Canada. I found an ideology of optimization, which works to communicate that environmental sustainability needs to and will be optimized using these technologies. I then discuss the ways that this ideology of optimization keeps current agricultural systems in place, solidifying the industrial and productivist paradigm of agriculture in Canada.
