Check out my spring seminar talk (https://lnkd.in/gwA3sqJv) on potential applications of vibrational communication in pest stink bug species, now on the OSU hort dept website. Can stink bug mating calls be used to disrupt courtship? Improve trap efficacy? I discuss the evidence in my presentation, which is the first half of the May 6th recording (followed by Kelley Asselin discussing lure development for ambrosia beetles).

Done! Celebrating the publishing of the final paper of the collection “Small Fish Value Chains in the Global South: A Value Chain Approach” in Maritime Studies, the entire collection can now be accessed freely for limited time. Together with Nireka Weeratunge, I have edited a collection of 9 papers on small fish value chains in the Global South. Recently, our synthesis of the collection was published. In the synthesis we tease out a number of commonalities between the papers, in particular a focus on the gendered nature of small fish value chains, a concern with people’s access to small fish, and attention for intra-household consumption patterns. In general, the papers have a strong focus on the agentive capacity of key actors in the value chains, despite the structural constraints experienced by these actors. Together, the papers give a comprehensive understanding of small fish value chains. As a collection, it has excellent comparative potential. See https://lnkd.in/e3tBf23R for the collection (and https://lnkd.in/eYtpb_HF for the synthesis.)?

Last week, EGF 2024, organized by European Grassland Federation, took place in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands.?With the general theme "Why grasslands?", a wide range of interesting talks and posters elaborated on the?importance of grasslands. While some see grasslands as the connection between different stakeholders?or as the basis of many ecosystem services, others see them as areas to put manure on. Beside this wide understanding of multifunctional grassland, a variety of sub themes had been discussed at the conference, too. The sub theme "Which?" focused on the methods that could be used to monitor, evaluate and steer grassland?management. Reidy Beat, Bruno Studer, Roland K?lliker and I contributed a three page paper (https://lnkd.in/eEvMm9rv, pp. 606–608) and a poster which I?presented at EGF 2024. We developed a method which facilitates the assessment of tiller densities?in managed grassland. Using the Tillerbox, we can cope with the limitations traditional methods have by... ? ...reducing the labor ?? ...increasing the sampled area ? ...temporally decoupling sampling from measuring ? ...being independent of weather conditions Overall, an easy-functioning tool for multifunctional grassland??
