Quick tip: If you're presenting at a conference or a professional association meeting, here are two things you need to do: 1. Promote your talk beforehand. Post about the event and your upcoming presentation to help "sell" it. Bring your own audience and fill those seats. 2. Follow up after the event. Post a thank you, ideally with a picture of you on stage. For both posts, make sure to thank the steering committee that selected you and the sponsors who made it happen. If you want to keep getting invited to speak, show some love to the folks who paid for the opportunity.

Your inability to network is the only thing stopping you from getting far in life. I can count how many times I’ve attended an event and just stood in the corner. Why? Because I’m intentional. If you are a lurker here on LinkedIn, you are most likely the wallflower at a networking event; I know because that was me. I hated events that required me to network...I felt awkward like I had no right to speak or be there. I did two things that changed it all. First, I joined Toastmasters and became really comfortable with public speaking. Now I speak in front of large audiences...and love it. Second, I began posting here on Linkedin. My first post took me days to prepare. I was so scared, and frankly, it was awful. But that is OK; that is how we all improve. Now, I grab a keyboard and go. And I engage, comment, and share. This has helped me get more comfortable. Now, I still feel awkward but far more confident at an event. If I see someone I know, I will approach them. If I don't know you, I will strike up a conversation. No more wallflower for me. It is OK; no one will die. So practice here; start with a comment; one day, you will be posting a video.
