This week on the banks of the Rio Grande, 52 new state, local, non-profit, and business organizations committed to advancing the America the Beautiful Freshwater Challenge, which sets goals to protect, restore, and reconnect eight million acres of wetlands and 100,000 miles of America’s river and streams by 2030.
Trout Unlimited was an inaugural member of the challenge, and Dan Roper, TU’s New Mexico state lead, joined Brenda Mallory, chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality, in welcoming the new members, among them the state of New Mexico.
More than 160 state and local governments, tribal entities, nonprofits, and businesses have committed to advancing policies and strategies for conserving and restoring the nation’s freshwater systems.
It was fitting that the announcement was in New Mexico, where we need for better protections for the state’s rivers and wetlands following a recent Supreme Court ruling reversing longstanding national Clean Water Act protections. Some of the state’s most popular trout waters are at risk as a result.
