Injection Wells As I discussed before we could use injection as a solution for NORM disposal and let’s take a closer look at that type. First and foremost, what is meaning of injection well or what is used for: Underground formation has got range of deep sandstones and limestone to soil layer so in porous geological formation the fluid or water could be placed in it that’s why we could inject water or salt water (brine) into it. Types of injection well According to the underground injection control program there are 6 class of injection wells and each one of them depends on the type of injected fluid also the depth for example: Class 1: we used it to dispose hazardous material like acids and toxic material like cyanide and that type of wells need Mechanical integrity every single year. Class 2: we used that for oil and gas waste like brine and when regulations preventing disposal of brine to surface and soils, injection became the best option and its as well as we could use it for dispose radioactive materials like NORM the wase produce from oil and gas activities related to decontamination and oil and gas production like gas separators filters that contains lots of radioactive sludge and that type of wells need mechanical integrity every 5 years. Class 4: in old times they used it for disposing radioactive waste and do you to lots of complains and contamination to water into or above a geologic formation that contains an underground source of drinking water In 1984, EPA banned that type of injection wells. When we use injection wells to dispose NORM or radioactive material in the form of fluid we must take care of the depth of the well and use the WLD for the well that we will use for injection process to make sure the injection fluid will not affect the underground water because we have some kind of isotopes in NORM like radium that could dissolve by water and absolutely cause cancer besides it’s toxicity as the chemistry of radium. Hydroprocessing Troubleshooting Series, Lesson No. 21: Heat exchangers: My Concerns in Maintenance and Turnarounds: Hello everyone, ?Continuing from Lesson No. 20, where we discussed Microbial Induced Corrosion (MIC) in heat exchangers, now let's address another issue: Chloride Salt Under-Deposit Corrosion (UDC) during heat exchanger maintenance and turnarounds. ?Ammonium chloride salts during operation might deposited on the effluent side of reactor feed-effluent heat exchangers upstream of the wash water injection and remain unwashed. While the salt may remain inert under dry conditions, its behavior changes drastically in the presence of a humid environment. When equipment is exposed to air and moisture, chlorides may result in highly corrosive conditions. This can lead to under-deposit. In stainless steel, such environments may also trigger stress corrosion cracking (SCC). ?It’s important to note: Chloride SCC on the effluent side of unwashed reactor feed-effluent heat exchangers during normal operation is unlikely because it requires a humid environment. However, during shutdowns, cleaning, or hydro-testing, when equipment is exposed to moisture and air, chloride salts become corrosive. ?To Prevent Chloride Salt Under-Deposit Corrosion, Apply the Following Measures: Low-Chloride water usage, Drying after hydro-testing, and passivation of stainless steel. ?A Practical Example: The heat exchanger shown in the picture below was found with dry salt deposits on tubesheet cold side, but showed no corrosion issues. However, it is critical to clean the equipment and not leave it in this condition during a turnaround. In another example, a heat exchanger exposed to water with high chloride content and left in a humid environment developed corrosion. ?Remember: Chloride salt under-deposit corrosion is a preventable issue, but it requires attention to detail during cleaning, hydro testing, and drying stages. Petrochemical equipment is frequently dismantled, how to keep it warm and insulated? Some equipment in the petrochemical industry is prone to generate high temperatures and heat during operation, which will not only cause energy waste, but also cause danger.
