Could you share your story with us? Public services should work for everyone. With our partner Black Equity Organisation, we're collecting evidence of ways that women and girls have been harmed by public services. We're asking women to tell us about their experiences of contact with policing, education, and/or mental health services. We are interested in hearing from women of all ethnicities, but we particularly encourage Black women to share their experiences. Your story will help us reimagine and campaign to reform public services. Real stories are so important in our fight for real social and political change. How do you keep the conversation on track when someone grabs the remote and switches the channel? It's a high-level leadership skill to be able to continue to keep conversations on track. Especially conversations about race and racism. That's one of the skills we focus on in my high-performance coaching sessions and trust me, we need these skills desperately now! #race #racism #diversity #inclusion #highperformance #leadership
Harvard social psychologist and author of "The Conversation: How Seeking and Speaking the Truth About Racism Can Radically Transform Individuals and Organizations"
How many times have you been in a conversation about a topic you care deeply about only to have someone interject with a completely different topic that takes the original conversation off-course? I’m sure we all can recall examples of this happening to us, but for BIPOC folks and people in marginalized communities, this kind of thing tends to happen A LOT—particularly when the topic in question is racism. This derailing of the discussion is an example of #ChannelSwitching. Channel switching is an effort—intentional or inadvertent—to divert a conversation about race or racism (typically anti-Black racism) to a topic that is more palatable or personally relevant to the individual attempting to shift the focus—say, to women’s rights or diversity of thought, for example. It seems that in the past two years, as the backlash against DEI has revved up, channel switching has also increased. In fact, it’s as if the country has collectively decided to switch the channel away from racism every time it’s brought up. This is a problem. Whether intentional or not, channel switching has real adverse effects on not just conversations about racism and social justice issues but also the possible solutions and means we have for tackling them. Last year, I wrote an article outlining some of those adverse effects and how we can do a better job of both addressing channel switching when it happens and avoiding it altogether. It might be a good time to revisit it: https://hubs.la/Q02ybk1k0 #Antiracism #DEI #TheConversation

?? **Exploring 'Centering White Victimhood' in Keith Boykin's 'Why Does Everything Have to Be About Race?'** ?? Continuing my deep dive into Keith Boykin's thought-provoking book, I've encountered a compelling section titled "Centering White Victimhood." Here's what stood out: 1?? **White Fragility:** This part echoes themes from Robin DiAngelo's "White Fragility," discussing how defensive reactions during racial conversations can significantly hinder progress toward racial equality. It's a critical look at the obstacles to open, productive dialogues. ?? 2?? **Affirmative Action Myths:** In Chapter 7, Boykin challenges the widespread myth of affirmative action as reverse discrimination, presenting a robust argument for its necessity in achieving true equity in opportunities. ?? 3?? **Layers of Privilege:** Chapter 8 illuminates the complex layers of privilege, reminding us that racial advantages exist independently of socioeconomic status or gender. It’s a powerful call to acknowledge and address these privileges. ?? Each chapter adds another layer of understanding to the critical conversations about equity and privilege in our society. ?? How do you approach discussions about privilege and affirmative action in your professional or personal life? Let's share insights and learn from each other! #SocialJustice #KeithBoykin #WhiteFragility #AffirmativeAction #WhitePrivilege #DiversityAndInclusion

6 DAYS LEFT to register for our virtual conversation on misogynoir and what it really takes to elect Black women. Join us next Wednesday, October 9, at 7:30PM Eastern/4:30PM Pacific and hear from EducateUS Lead Organizer Candace Hardnett (@godly_andgay) and @the_emancipator's Editor-in-Chief Jamil Smith (jamilksmith). You'll learn how misogynoir is more than just racism + sexism, the surprising and not-at-all surprising roles it's playing in this year's election (not just in the race for President), and some simple and effective ways each of us can interrupt and defeat it when we see it. From VP Kamala Harris to your local school board, whether Black women get elected this November will depend, in part, on what we do right now to combat misogynoir - registration is FREE and you can do it at the link below and invite your friends, too! https://tr.ee/Asho4gbA9v We really can win with Black women this November -- but only if we all understand the assignment. #sexed #sexedvoter #sexedforall #misogynoir #socialjustice #sexeducation #educationpolicy #activism

Hey everyone, story time from the clinic! ?? During a recent mentorship session, I asked my mentee, "If 'I treat all my patients equally,' does that mean 'all my patients receive the same level of care'?" It got her thinking: Is this a trick question? What do you think? Was this a trick question?? Are equality and equity really the same thing? Let's break it down pelvic PT style: Equality means treating everyone the same, while equity means giving each person what they need to thrive. In the world of women's sexual health, cultural nuances can significantly impact treatment outcomes. For instance, did you know that sexual pain is reported in: - 20% of American women - 2x more common in Black women - 33% of Iranian women - 48% of Turkish women - 64% of South Asian-Indian women Sex and race can both be uncomfortable topics, but it's crucial we address how they interact with each other. Black women are not only more likely to experience this pain but also more likely to be neglected in the medical system even when they report it! This Juneteenth, let's rethink our approach. Treating all women equally might not be enough. Instead, striving for equity ensures every woman gets the tailored care she deserves. ??

We are not suprised by the recent headlines! Misogynoir, the intersectionality of racism and sexism faced by Black women, is a significant issue that deserves our attention. It's concerning when political leaders or any figures in positions of power fail to address or contribute to such hate crimes and discrimination. That's why organizations like Creating Equalz are doing important work in shedding light on these issues and fostering conversations around them. We must continue to advocate for change and hold those in power accountable for their actions and words. Let's work together to create a more equitable world. #Misogynoir #CreatingEqualz #Intersectionality
