This week I had the pleasure of presenting a session at the Experiential & Work-Integrated Learning Ontario (EWO) virtual conference with my talented and forward thinking colleague Nicole Norris on COLABORATORY (and yes, we meant to spell it with only one "L" as in "co-lab"), How experiential learning collides with applied research and innovation to build skills needed for future talent considering people, planet and profit. We spoke about COLABORATORY as a model for experiential and work integrated learning through our innovation centres, including Social Innovation at Georgian College, #ChangeTheNow, the Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre and Georgian College Research & Innovation. We asked ourselves "How might we collaborate and design innovative experiences for students and partners to build innovation competencies, changemaking mindsets and opportunities for students, industry and community?" We looked at how this work supports students, industry, and community in our region, from changemaking to commercialization, ultimately working towards building stronger, greener, innovative, inclusive and meaningful change and growth in our 7 campus communities. This past year, we were fortunate to receive funding from Business + Higher Education Roundtable to support a unique COLABORATORY project that has helped us to scale programming and focus on data collection to better understand and track the work we do and the impact we're creating, while also partnering with the Barrie Chamber of Commerce to continue to build strong relations with SME's in our region. Did you know there are other EU-funded projects focused on microcredentials? ? Microcredentials - A New Path for Capacity Building in VET ? ?? In the modern world, where the pace of change and technology is accelerating, vocational training is undergoing a major transformation. Microcredentials, certifications that validate specific skills and knowledge in a short period of time, have become an essential tool for updating and acquiring specific skills quickly and efficiently. ? ?? Microcredentials have several advantages, such as flexibility and accessibility, allowing individuals to acquire them at their own pace. Their practical approach eliminates non-relevant information, enabling more directed and effective learning. Additionally, their adaptability and recognition in the labour market are essential in a world where the demands of companies change rapidly. ? ?? For this reason, there are increasing efforts and projects aimed at acquiring them. Besides our project MIC4VET, there are other initiatives on this mission, such as “Microcredentials - A New Path for Capacity Building in VET” [MC.VET] under the Erasmus+ programme.? ? ?? This project aims to strengthen the link between EU and non-EU countries of Southeast Europe (Western Balkans) to support the relevance, accessibility and responsiveness of VET institutions and systems, to changes in the working market. FLITAPE workshop in Bergen! On Friday 15th of November, NLA H?gskolen and Fremtenkt met at Fremtenkt's offices in Bergen for the second of two workshops aimed at adapting the Futures Literacy training module previously developed by Fremtenkt, Finland Futures Research Centre (FFRC) and Copenhagen Institute for Futures Studies to the teaching program at NLA. Over the course of three intense hours, Heidi, Julie and Synne from NLA and Ragnhild and Sveinung from Fremtenkt hashed out a plan for a futures-oriented full-day workshop on January 21st, 2025. In addition, they discussed how best to collect survey data for evaluation of the program, as well as gather further data for the research that NLA plans to conduct on futures-oriented education for sustainable development. Background: Fremtenkt, CIFS, FFRC, NLA and VIA University College have received funding from Nordplus for the project Futures Literacy in Teacher and Professional Education in the Nordics (FLITAPE). The aim of the project is to develop a training module that will provide future teachers and other professionals with the theoretical insight and practical skills they need to promote Futures Literacy among their students and colleagues. ??? Transforming Education Through Service-Learning ??? I am excited to reflect on the inspiring experience we shared with @Luisa Mota Ribeiro from Universidade Católica Portuguesa, during the first Transform4Europe Service-Learning workshop * Building bridges across T4EU Universities. This International workshop was not just an event; it was a powerful gathering of passionate educators dedicated to making a difference. Together, we explored the transformative potential of curricular Service-Learning (SL), diving deep into how we can integrate civic and social justice issues as well as the Sustainable Development Goals into our courses. The energy in the room—whether virtual or in person—was palpable as we engaged in meaningful discussions aimed at fostering critical reflection on SL experiences. It is incredible to witness the commitment from so many educators who are eager to blend educational goals with community service, creating impactful learning experiences that truly meet societal needs. Service-learning is more than an approach; it’s a movement that empowers students to become changemakers. By connecting academic learning with real-world application, we are not just teaching; we are inspiring future leaders who will carry forth our shared mission of social responsibility and community engagement. "Academy for Responsible Development" Project's Final Meeting Was Held in Krakow, Poland Key discussions centred around the imminent closing of the Academy of Responsible Development project, including reviews of the piloting phase and the Video-on-demand (VOD) resources. Strategies for promoting the project's outcomes, evaluating its impact, and participating in an upcoming international congress were also explored. The meeting emphasized the importance of disseminating project results through presentations, workshops, and interactive exhibits at the congress while fostering integration among students from the Academies in Poland, Netherlands, Italy, and Turkey. Impact: The "Academy for Responsible Development" project increased young people's awareness and social commitment to sustainable development.
