We Don't Have Time?is launching a series of lectures together with a number of Stockholm based institutions on the connection between Climate Change and Democracy. I encourage all to take a look at these lectures, which will be available on demand via We Don't Have Time in the coming weeks. The importance of Democracy in the fight against Climate Change is often overlooked, sometimes it's even seen as a hindrance for climate action, with authoritarian states seemingly being able to enforce environmental policy much more swiftly. This often fails to materialize as autocracies rely on constant supervision to enforce a policy. This is because of a lack of "Buy-in" from citizens in non-democracies. With representation, proper information and opportunities for input from citizens, decisions take longer to form, but are much more likely to actually reach the desired effect. Looking forward to this series as it will dive deeper into these questions! #Democracy #ClimateChange #Sustainability

“Climate optimism is necessary— but it needs to be factual” I quote, translated from the Dutch article below: “It's great when climate optimism helps people fight for fundamental changes. But when it blinds them to the need for FAST [my emphasis] systemic change, it only perpetuates the destructive path we are currently on.” Spot on! Finally, a well written, concise and succinct article about ‘climate optimism’ that I usually refer to as ‘techno-optimism’, because ‘climate change techno-optimism’ is just too long ;-) All jokes aside: this is serious shit. We are ignoring, distracting and deceiving our way so suprasystemic collapse. It’s preposterous. The suprasystem is planet Earth with its dominant species Homo sapiens, of which 8 billion specimen are currently doing their utmost to make their own living environment uninhabitable. ‘Suprasystemic collapse’ is therefor the catastrophic and cataclysmic crash, destruction, ruination and disintegration of human civilization as we know it today. Is that enough synonyms there for ya? Do you feel the urgency now? If not, I would ask you to join me in a little science experiment: https://lnkd.in/e76jHRK9 [‘This is why we don’t believe human civilization can collapse (and why we don’t understand accelerated growth)’] Put on your lab coat and engage in some data extrapolation with me please. If that doesn’t open your eyes to what’s coming our way, I don’t know what will. Perhaps this may help too: — https://lnkd.in/ed_FGiqD [‘Are you a techno-optimist? Oh yeah? Do you also still believe in fairy tales?’] — https://lnkd.in/ejfCnERc [‘If you are a techno-optimist, I would like to rattle your cage’] — https://lnkd.in/efXkyTz3 [‘Holding the techno-optimists to account (amendment)’] — https://lnkd.in/e6zqV2_3 [‘We should stop talking about the year 2100 | On the difference between linear and accelerated decline’] — https://lnkd.in/epswWK6S [‘How long can we keep accelerating until it blows?’] — https://lnkd.in/eTYFstbU [‘Why doesn’t accelerated growth or decline scare us?’] — https://lnkd.in/eTQd8dYu [‘Even when our civilization breaks down, there’s still a lot we can do’] — https://lnkd.in/eE3W3Ft5 [‘What would happen if we all had an epiphany about climate change?’] — https://lnkd.in/eDrcK_WS [‘Where do you stand on the scale between climate change denialism and doomerism?’] — https://lnkd.in/e6U3Fp6J [‘Our civilization has a lifespan of only ten days’] — https://lnkd.in/eBhRppZA [‘The five stages of accelerated global warming grief’] — https://lnkd.in/e5hsvTSc [‘The fragmentation problem: why there are no solutions to our global problems’]
We can use all the climate optimism we can get. But when it's based on selective science, packages a belief in green growth as neutral, and brushes aside system-critical voices, it may just perpetuate the destructive status quo.
