We are thrilled to congratulate the Oregon Humane Society and its Salem Campus on the grand opening of the new wing at the OHS Salem Veterinary Clinic! Our partners at Oregon Humane Society Salem hosted a ribbon-cutting event to celebrate the expansion of their veterinary clinic, which now includes a Digital X-ray and Dental Suite. Attendees toured the updated facility and met Coco, the first dog and patient to benefit from the new dental services. This momentous occasion was marked by the presence of many supporters, including Oregon State Senator Deb Patterson. We're proud to partner with OHS in their mission to make Oregon the safest place for companion animals, combat animal cruelty, and ensure accessible veterinary care for all. A special shoutout to our amazing Walsh team, Patti Miles and John Wilson, and the excellent collaboration with Ashley Evans from Oregon Humane Society and Kim Olson AIA, DBIA from Mahlum ! Today, on #WorldSpayDay, we're thrilled to announce a transformative grant to COMMUNITY ANIMAL MEDICINE PROJECT, INC. (CAMP)! Since their launch in 2007, Michelson Found Animals has been an integral partner to CAMP Clinics, in which time CAMP has spayed and neutered over 300,000 dogs and cats. The $1 million grant will be used to: - Expand access to affordable veterinary care: Fund a portion of the purchase of a new property in South Los Angeles, transforming it into a low-cost veterinary clinic and high-volume training center. This expansion will significantly increase the number of pets served annually by CAMP Clinics. - Increase spay/neuter surgeries: Support CAMP’s spay/neuter program, offering affordable surgeries to pet owners in historically excluded communities. This will help control pet overpopulation, reduce the number of animals entering shelters, and ultimately save lives. - Enhance veterinary training: Fund training programs for veterinarians in HQHVSN surgeries, a proven method for increasing access to affordable spay/neuter services while maintaining high standards of care. This grant is a giant leap forward for animal welfare in SoCal!? Together with CAMP Clinics, we're building a future where every pet receives the care they deserve. Researcher | Licensed Clinical Social Worker | Director of Veterinary Social Work | Supporting the *mutual* well-being of people, animals, and their environments!
Despite the loss of beloved animal family members resulting in millions of us grieving annually, “pet loss” continues to be a form of “disenfranchised grief”. “Disenfranchised grief” is when a culture/society fails to acknowledge or validate certain types of losses/grief, making it hard for people to express their sadness or receive support. Because such losses are often not recognized or understood by others, people may feel isolated and unsupported. A 2021 review of 48 studies on pet loss conducted by Dr. Rachel M. Park and colleagues from North Carolina State University found people frequently reported feelings of embarrassment and loneliness after the loss of their pet due to disenfranchised grief. https://lnkd.in/eFQFdGNi One simple thing we can do is acknowledge each other’s companion animal losses with expressions of care. If you struggle to find the words, Open Door Veterinary Collective has electronic pet sympathy cards you can send via email or text. These include recognition of a donation (any amount - the amount isn’t disclosed) from you in memory of the animal that goes to a emergency veterinary care fund: https://lnkd.in/en3ash-e Your local humane society or animal shelter may also offer an online “donation in memory of” option that includes sending a card. There is nothing easy about losing a beloved companion animal, but we’re *not* alone in it, and there are supports; see The Ohio State University veterinary social work pet loss resource page: https://lnkd.in/eajSzCcP Our species lifespans are often mismatched with those of our companion animals; grieving their loss is often inevitable, but “disenfranchised grief” is not! ???? #humananimalbond #pets #petloss #grief #griefsupport #griefandloss #griefawareness #grieving #animalwelfare #family #community #animalwelfare #veterinary #veterinarymedicine #mentalhealth #socialwork #bereavement

Researcher | Licensed Clinical Social Worker | Director of Veterinary Social Work | Supporting the *mutual* well-being of people, animals, and their environments!
This is great news that I am so happy to share!! Open Door Veterinary Collective has been awarded a research grant from ASPCA; the grant will enable social workers in animal welfare settings to collaboratively create practice guidelines through participatory action research! While social workers are trained human service professionals, they are increasing employed by animal shelters, humane societies, and veterinary access to care clinics. Working alongside veterinary and animal welfare professionals, social workers support the mutual well-being of human-animal families through their specific skills in and knowledge of intervention with people and communities. Social workers hold a bachelor’s and/or master’s degree in social work, are typically licensed through state board exams, and must obtain ongoing continuing education to maintain their licenses. Through their education and training, social workers are uniquely equipped to provide support in housing, health, economic, and other crises that disrupt human-animal families, as well as to advocate for policy and system changes that reduce barriers to accessing care and support mutual human and animal well-being. Unfortunately, social workers working in animal welfare organizations must often “start from scratch” and/or “reinvent the wheel” in determining specific social work practice processes, as there are not yet established guidelines and resources for this emerging practice focus. The guidelines generated through this research project will better equip social workers in animal welfare settings to support the well-being of people, animals, and communities! So much gratitude to the ASPCA, the University of Tennessee Center for Veterinary Social Work, and the International Association of Veterinary Social Work for making this research possible!! #humananimalbond #socialwork #humanesociety #animalcontrol #animals #veterinarymedicine #vetmed #accesstocare #veterinarysocialwork #animalwelfare #onehealth #onewelfare #publichealth #socialdeterminantsofhealth #innovation #interprofessional #nasw #community #research #participatoryresearch
We're thrilled that Open Door Veterinary Collective was awarded an Access to Veterinary Care (AVC) Research Grant from the ASPCA to collaboratively build social work capabilities in animal welfare through participatory research! While humane societies, animal shelters, veterinary outreach clinics, and other access to care organizations are increasingly hiring social workers to address human needs that arise, no practice guidelines exist for social work in these settings. Open Door will bring together social workers from animal welfare settings across the nation to share knowledge and collaboratively develop best practice guidelines for supporting people and their animals through a year-long participatory action research project. Open Door’s Director of Veterinary Social Work Dr Janet Hoy-Gerlach will kick off the project with a planning retreat at the University of Tennessee Center for Veterinary Social Work (UTCVSW). The UTCVSW and the International Association for Veterinary Social Work have been collaborators from the inception of this project and we're grateful for their ongoing support and guidance. Thanks to the ASPCA for their generous support of this collaborative research.

Ever explored “financial triage”? It’s like medical triage, but for client finances, and it helps veterinary teams & clients in several key ways: ?? Avoid cost surprises: Helps your team discuss costs upfront with clients, preventing the “I didn’t know it would cost this much” scenario at checkout/discharge. ?? Awareness & sensitivity to budget constraints: Help your team understand and respect clients’ individual financial situations, which vary greatly and exist along a spectrum of affordability. ?? Identify appropriate payment options: Helps the veterinary team find the optimal payment solutions for each client’s unique budget. ?? Reduces judgmentalness & erroneous assumptions: Reminds teams that affordability isn’t just about “can or can’t pay” or “will or won’t pay.” Exploring the vast “in-between” with clients reduces tension, fear, defensiveness, and conflict for both sides. Interested in learning more? Don’t miss Aimee St.Arnaud at the PetSmart Charities booth at #VMX, where she’ll share more details about financial triage and how to use it to enhance relationship-centered at your clinic.
