I was blessed to present at the 2024 Texas School Safety Conference in San Antonio, TX. My presentation was on operational plan development for school events. As I pointed out, many districts or campuses seldom conduct any type of formal planning when it comes to even the most routine events. This usually results in delays, staff not knowing their roles, and a lack of understanding who may be truly in charge of a particular event. The old saying, "The lack of proper planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part!" Does not really hold true for first responders. In fact, it should probably say, "The lack of proper planning on your part is most likely going to cause me to respond to an emergency that could have been prevented." Operational planning is not just limited to schools, all businesses, and even personal events such as traveling party planning, and home maintenance tasks. Things always go smoother when you have a plan!

Our 3-day Foundation Level Restorative Conference Facilitator’s course is for colleagues with some knowledge of restorative practices wanting to take their skills to the next level and to enable a referral system of support to be created in their school or workplace. Ensuring all staff are able to facilitate ‘restorative conversations’ or ‘corridor conferences’ is essential to the creation of a whole school restorative culture, (see our whole school Introduction to RP for more information). Whole school training equips everyone with the skills to ensure low-level incidents are resolved quickly at a classroom/playground level. However not all incidents can be resolved with a quick ‘on the spot’ restorative conversation. As I step away from Berwickshire High School for the next year, I want to congratulate our school community on the superb progress we’ve made together in 4 years. Our school today is unrecognisable from the one that was rated three ‘Weak’s & an ‘Unsatisfactory’ in its 2019 inspection. Recent staff quotes help capture just how far we’ve come: - “Our school ethos is excellent.” - “Behaviour is very good and something we should be proud of.” - “This is by far the best professional learning offer of any school.” - “Staff CPD just gets better and better.” In the re-inspection, inspectors reported: “The quality and consistency of learning, teaching and assessment has improved considerably” and “The school environment now provides a calm, orderly context for learning”. We’ve got to where we are by focusing on the right things, in the right way: 1. The continuous improvement of teaching practice. 2. High-quality professional development, focused on teaching and learning. Supporting both is our ongoing focus on high standards of behaviour across our school. A real team effort, and one everyone involved should feel very proud of.
