"With this book I was interested in this idea of 'assembling.' [Sophie Calle's] work speaks to me because she often exhibits fragments of a narrative or story, and as the viewer you’re called to piece it together." —Julia Born, designer of the "Sophie Calle: Overshare" exhibition catalogue Read the full interview about the project on the Walker Reader ?? https://wlkr.art/40tMDh6 Experience "Sophie Calle: Overshare" for free during Free Thursday Nights and Free First Saturdays. Sunday thoughts. Is there something creeping up on us? Malcolm Gladwell’s new book, Revenge of the Tipping Point, reveals the rise of the troubling form of social engineering happening in our digitally super-connected environment. Are our thoughts our own? He is trying to help make sense of the contagions of the modern world. Kirsi Piha, a Finnish author in her new book Muukalaisia (translates into ’strangers’), reveals mechanisms tearing us apart, dividing humans into ’us’ and ’them’. How are our opinions and perceptions formed and again - are they really ours? Why is it so hard to have un-polarized discussions? One could easily become depressed when reading these books. We are being manipulated in so many ways that it takes great effort to stay cool-headed and critically minded. What I find hope-inducing, however, is that such books now emerge. Collective wake-up is much needed for us each not to fall into our individual rabbit holes. PS. The painting is a self portrait from 1872 by a Swiss artist Arnold B?cklin. There is an intriguing exhibition called Gothic Modern at the Finnish National Gallery Ateneum in Helsinki - go visit if you can!

"Would I Put My Name On This?" I always ask myself before sending work out. It's a simple, grounding way to check in with yourself and measure if your work meets your own standards. "Am I genuinely proud of what I’ve created?" "Would I want my clients to see my name right next to it?" ? If the answer is yes, then you know you're putting out something valuable, something you believe in. ? If the answer is no, it’s back to the drawing board because if you wouldn’t sign your name to it, why would anyone else trust it? ?????????? ??????, ?????? ???????? ???? ?????? ???? ?????? ???????? ????????????????, ???????????????? ???????????? ???? ????????. ???????? ?????? ?????? ???????? ???????? ???? ??????????????????, ????’?? ?? ?????????????? ???????? ????’?? ???????? ???????? ????????. When learning a new concept I tend to draw comparisons with design or whatever daily life situation I find similar. I couldn't make an exception when I met Wassim at improv theater.?I found it fascinating to see how his work as a postdoc researcher in literature relates to design. So today, we have Wassim as a guest, and we will explore the world of a literature researcher to find similarities between his work and design. You can listen to the entire episode here ?? https://lnkd.in/dJFNKSE2

?? Rediscovering History Through Graphic Art: I Will Always Wait for Your Return Jordi Peidro’s I Will Always Wait for Your Return offers a moving portrayal of Spanish Republican exiles and their resilience in the face of unimaginable hardship. Through a visual style blending the Valencian tradition with the expressive illustrations inspired by the interwar period, this graphic novel narrates the journey of Paco Aura and his experiences in the Mauthausen concentration camp. This adaptation powerfully intertwines historical storytelling with visual impact, inviting readers to "piece together" this poignant chapter of history. The book has touched many in Spain, already reaching its second edition, and is gaining attention in Germany as well. A book like this not only reflects on the past but also prompts us to question our present, opening the door to a deeper understanding of history for audiences worldwide. Ready to explore a story that connects generations and crosses borders?

'Ngarrgidj Morr (the proper path to follow) is based on our ceremonial processes, and the stories, motifs and designs or patterns that have been passed down to myself and my brothers. It’s not really about the ceremony itself; what it’s about is the process of what it takes you to even get to the ceremony, which is a ceremony in itself. It’s a whole ritual, getting to the ceremony ground. It’s about the movement of people and your right to be part of that ceremony, or your position as part of that ceremony. It’s about everyone’s connection to it and where they belong within it. The three designs are about location (where you are), practice (what you do) and position (your individual place or status within the group), all combined to reveal the right pattern for you personally.' — Darrell Sibosado, 2021 LISTEN | This is one of twelve artworks highlighted in the Ever Present: First Peoples Art of Australia audio guide: https://lnkd.in/gV7Av26u Exhibition open until 24 Aug 2025 | Free

Minimal Art: The Critical Perspective by Frances Colpit In this important work, Frances Colpitt chronicles the Minimal art movement of the 1960s. Maintaining the original spirit of the period―enthusiasm for innovation and a passionate commitment to intellectual inquiry―Colpitt provides an excellent documentary history that is both thorough and nonpartisan. Using a metacritical approach that embraces critical writings of the artists themselves, interviews by herself and the others, and a generous sampling of illustrations, Colpitt sets foth the issues and arguments and identifies key concepts that are crucial to an understanding of Minimal art. These include the frequent use of industrial materials and techniques; nonrelational principles of composition; and theoretical issues of scale, presence and thatricality. Also discussed are issues of abstraction, illusion, and reductionism as revealed in the writing and artistic productions of such leading innovators as Frank Stella, Donald Judd, and Robert Morris, among others. An appendix lists major exhibitions and reviews. #books #designbooks #minimalart #library #designstudio #thebranvetica #graphicdesign #brandidentity #brandidentitydesigner

ROGER ACKLING: 'SUNLIGHT', a purely visual critical reaction to Roger's solo show at Norwich Castle, avoiding context and art history. The full article is on my website blog. Don’t ask ‘What does it mean’, ask ‘What is it?’ Roger Ackling’s exhibition ‘Sunlight’ was opened by Simon Ofield-Kerr with these words, and they feel like a glass of fresh water. No need then to refer to context, art history, his influences and friends. What are they? ‘Sunlight’ is a gentle word, caressing, evocative, but the sun is the monstrous atomic generator of our universe, powerful beyond imagination, obliviously pumping out energy whose effects are benign and destructive. Roger sits by the sea with his little mirror forcing the mighty sun along bits of weathered wood with his will and his steady hand. Line below line - you have to ask how he makes them so straight, so uniform, so mechanical. Why this size and not that? why horizontal? Burning so evenly is an act of controlled damage like cutting, and the lines are also a way of cross-hatching, drawing, the muscular connections between brain, eye and hand operating together.
