What RANDOM thing is your home town known for?
From the Eiffel Tower to the Pyramids,
Place Branding is often linked with iconic landmarks.
But there are so many different types of distinctive brand assets -
from local accents, sayings & slogans,
to popular food & drink or famous residents...
Working on the Mr Simm's Sweet Shop repositioning,
I learnt a lot about the provenance of famous vintage sweets...
?? Pontefract Cakes from the eponymous village in Yorkshire,
?? Uncle Joe's Mint Balls from Wigan in Lancashire...
And moving on from sweets to statues?
Well,
?? NYC has the Statue of Liberty, of course.
?? Easter Island has its Moai heads, &
??♀? Copenhagen, The Little Mermaid
but my own wee village of Timperley in Cheshire has...

Frank Sidebottom!
To be fair, for a fairly small village, we’ve done alrightish for celebrity residents…
Home to musicians Ian Brown & John Squire from the legendary Stone Roses
as well as Paul Hanley from The Fall,
plus comedy writer & actress Caroline Aherne
But none of them have a statue in the village high street, do they?
Nope, that kudos goes to Frank!
Obvs, I'm sure you know this already ?? but
Frank Sidebottom was a character created by comedian & musician Chris Sievey whose lovely family still live locally.
Frank's even got his own documentary!
(check out “Being Frank: The Chris Sievey story” on Amazon Prime…)
At Xmas, Frank wears his red Santa coat…
And, yesterday he got dressed up for the Manchester Marathon
Go Frank!
So, what random, interesting or unusual thing is your town or village known for?
