It’s back to school for kids, which means the topic of phones and screens is top of mind. Here are a few things we’re trying as a family with our kids: 1?? ????’???? ?????????????????? ???? ???? ?????????? ???????????? ?????? ???????????? ?????????? ?????????? ???????? ????????????. We decided a few years ago this would be a hill we die on. No phones until high school and, as far as we can push out social media, the better. While our older son occasionally asks about getting a phone, it doesn’t seem to be the bane of his existence. As a compromise, we got him and his brother Apple Watches, which are pretty locked down by us but give them the ability to communicate with friends and, more importantly, us. Without phones we find ourselves needing to set less boundaries around screen time, which is nice. I know many other families who have made different decisions but this was the one we felt was best for our family. 2?? ???? ?????????????? ???? ????????????????. This started off easy but has become increasingly challenging. Our sons’ watches stay in our room, but there’s a computer in the bedroom — and the iPad seems to make its way in there as well. We’re thinking of moving the computer out of the bedroom completely and placing it in a communal work area. 3?? ?????????? ?????????? ?????? ?????????????????? ?????? ????????. When school is in session, our kids get to pick one night during the week to play video games. Homework needs to be done but, other than that, it’s their choice. This gives them some autonomy and lets us keep screen time manageable during the week. As a family, we commit to no screens at the dinner table (harder for us parents), and I’m personally trying to commit to no phones for the first hour after I wake up, which I’m finding more challenging than I thought! What Happened When Students Gave Up Their Phones for 21 Days? The Results Are Eye-Opening. Imagine asking teens to part with their phones for three whole weeks. Sounds impossible, right? But that's exactly what happened at Stanway School in Essex, where students participated in a Total Phone Ban Experiment. Here are the results: ?The first week was predictably tough →They felt disconnected and lost. →They were frustrated and anxious. →They even questioned their existence. ?By the second week, the students began to adapt →Books replaced TikTok as their source of entertainment. →Conversations with family and friends grew deeper. →Bike rides and fresh air became their escape. ?By the end of 21 days, the results were transformative →Some deleted TikTok entirely. →Others created intentional "block time" for their phones. ?Here is what their teachers observed: →They displayed a newfound focus in class. →Students were more engaged and ready to learn. →Their eye contact and listening improved significantly.
