I'm excited to share some personal highlights from the past academic year, a period filled with challenges, learning, and significant milestones. Graduation: I’m proud to have graduated with an International Bachelor in Economics and Business Economics, earning an 8.0/10.0 on my thesis. My research, titled "Evaluating the Influence of Sustainability Ratings on Sectoral ETF Performance During Market Crises: Insights from Health, Financial, Consumer, Real Estate, Energy, and Technology Sectors," was both challenging and rewarding. Diving deep into how sustainability impacts market resilience during crises was a fascinating experience, and it’s an area I’m passionate about exploring further. HSBC Internship: Over the past 11 months, I had the privilege of interning full-time at HSBC, supporting the Global Banking Coverage team. Balancing this with full-time classes was intense, but the experience was invaluable. I had the opportunity to work on live deals, contribute to strategic discussions, and deepen my understanding of global banking. It taught me a lot about time management, prioritization, and staying resilient under pressure. Managing to earn 60 ECTS credits while working full-time was no small feat, but it showed me just how much I’m capable of when I put my mind to it. Treasurer Role at EESA: Beyond academics and work, I also served as Treasurer for the Eastern European Students Association. This role allowed me to develop my financial management skills, as I was responsible for budgeting and ensuring the financial health of the organization. It was also an incredibly rewarding experience in terms of working with people from diverse backgrounds, organizing events, and fostering a sense of community. The lessons I learned about collaboration, leadership, and communication will stay with me for a long time. Looking back on this year, I’m filled with gratitude for the challenges that pushed me, the opportunities that shaped me, and the people who supported me along the way. I’m eager to take these experiences forward as I embrace new opportunities and continue my journey in economics and finance.

Today I turned 27. This is the story of how I went from a shy international student to a 7-figure start-up founder in ~8 years ?? In 2016, I moved to the UK from Pakistan ????. For the first 6 months, I called my mum every weekend begging her to allow me to move back as I just wasn’t fitting in and couldn’t make friends. In 2018, after 500+ rejections for UK jobs, I landed a visa-sponsored job at KPMG UK. In 2021, I landed my 2nd UK job at Raindrop, a FinTech start-up and helped scale the company from £6 to £20 million in 15 months. In 2022, I joined Antler (a start-up incubator)... where I co-launched a free program helping international students land UK jobs. In one year I helped Aarti, Evana, Maria and 29 others land UK jobs in ~60 days. I then broke up with my co-founder and took out a £7k loan to launch International Hustlers… a private community of international students looking to land a UK job in 90 days. In our first 8 months, International Hustlers has helped 100+ students land UK jobs and has generated £500,000+ in revenue. You're probably wondering "But Farhoon, how have you and your students landed such prestigious UK jobs as international students?". I SWEAR all we did was ask strangers for help. The saying goes "If you DON'T ask, you DON'T get".. and it's SO true. For EVERY interview we landed, we messaged 20 to 30 people current employees asking for advice. Below is the EXACT imperfect message I sent to a manager at KPMG who helped me prepare for my interview: "Hey {Name}! Hope you are doing well. I've applied for the Audit role at KPMG and have a Launchpad coming up. Do you have tips for the interview as I'm scared the follow-up questions might be in too much depth Thanks!! :)" Please repost ?? so 1000s of international students ask strangers for help ?? If you'd like to see the EXACT messages I sent, which helped me land 3 prestigious UK jobs including KPMG and Antler (a top global VC firm), comment "Job" and I'll send you my successful messages from the past 8 years ??

One of the best feelings of educating online is seeing the results. These individuals secured roles at firms like Goldman Sachs and J.P. Morgan by simply applying the strategies I share. These are individuals just like you who’ve acted on the insights learned. Best of all, they didn't attend elite universities, have perfect grades, or industry connections. Oleksandra – “After numerous rejections, Afzal’s videos and advice helped me land my dream Spring Week offer at Goldman Sachs. I couldn’t have done it without his support.” James – “Just received an offer from JPMorgan! Afzal, your guidance has been a game-changer.” Diyan – “Afzal’s free YouTube content helped me secure a job offer from PwC. His CV and cover letter guides were invaluable. Thank you for making this journey possible, Afzal!” Christopher – “Afzal’s Private Equity guide was key in my career change. It’s a straightforward, comprehensive resource that made a huge impact.” Gaman – “Afzal’s guides on investment management were essential. They helped me secure my first interview at a hedge fund!” I share these not to brag or toot my own horn. I share them to let you know that it's possible to break into prestigious careers even from unconventional backgrounds. All you need is the right information, strategy and approach. If you're reading this and you: 1. Want to break into the industry 2. Are willing to put in the work 3. Want free access to a growing portal of resources 4. ?? My mom called me crazy when I quit banking to work in recruitment ??To her, money and status > happiness and fulfilment ?? When I graduated in 2015, I joined the Management Associate Program at Citi ICG, which was a 2 year rotation program across different departments including Investment Banking, Sales & Trading and Private Banking. ?? My mom was really proud of me as this program only admitted 5 graduates in Hong Kong that year. She thought the external title of Citi and Investment Banking would bring our family pride. I understand that many Asian parents like to compare their kids and so does mine. ?? The people I met at Citi were really smart and nice. They taught me a lot about the financial market and they were talented at their jobs. However, I did not feel the work was interesting. Hence, I switched to recruitment and I realised the importance of exploring different industries before settling onto one. Even though there was a pay cut, I enjoy my job a lot at Michael Page and have been working in the same industry for almost 7 years. ??My mom still does not understand why I changed my job up till today. (Mom, in case you have an LinkedIn account, please reply to this ????) She feels money and prestige are more important than happiness and self-fulfillment because she believes once you have enough money, you can gain happiness in the free time. (I kind of agree and disagree in some way: Granted money is important). Our values differ a lot and I respect our differences. Today, I am still trying to explain to her having worked in my job for 7 years ?? ? How about you? ? Do your parents agree with what you are doing? ? Have you come across a difficult life decision and how did you pick in the end?

I'm excited to impart the knowledge I gained from my internship. We conducted research on the Chinese Bank Crisis this week with the help of our external mentor, Balachandran Venkataraman, CFA ??Economic research analysts can learn a lot from the experiences of Chinese bank crises. The overshadow banking sector's role is one of the main causes for concern. Though their reliance on short-term funding to make long-term loans created a ticking time bomb, these unregulated institutions drove the rapid growth of credit. As the economy soured, these institutions encountered liquidity shortages, and defaults spread throughout the financial system, posing a risk to wider instability. ??The relationship between state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and Chinese banks is another important lesson. A risky feedback loop was created by banks' heavy investment in SOEs. Banks that held the debt of SOEs suffered when they faltered financially. Furthermore, because institutions expected bailouts in the event of trouble, implicit government guarantees for certain banks encouraged riskier lending practices. This additional "moral hazard" made vulnerabilities worse. The crises also revealed significant regulatory gaps. The financial system grew faster than regulations, which left many institutions unmonitored and open to reckless behaviour. It was challenging to determine the actual financial health of banks and other financial players due to lax accounting standards and a lack of transparency. These crises highlight how crucial careful liquidity management is. To weather tough Financial Times, banks must diversify their funding sources and keep sufficient reserves. Furthermore, a healthy real estate market is essential because Chinese bank crises have frequently been associated with booms and busts in this industry. Lastly, it is important to pay careful attention to how well the government intervenes during these crises. Even though taking action by the government can help stabilize the system temporarily, it's vital to think about any potential negative effects, like discouraging market discipline and postponing necessary reforms. #PIBM #InternshipbyPIBM #PIBMPune Paterson Securities Pvt. What does Sa Sa International Holdings Limited's CFO Danny Ho like most about the IR-related work he does? 'Definitely the smaller meetings, because the Hong Kong investment community can be more introverted and less willing to raise hands and ask questions in public,' he says. 'Now, we allow people to anonymously write questions into our platform so we can address them, but I definitely enjoy the one-to-one meetings, because you get a lot more in-depth questions people may not be comfortable asking elsewhere and you can respond more directly and more thoroughly.' Garnet Roach spoke to Ho about his journey into the C-suite and his views on how to manage communications with shareholders at the 'Sephora of?Hong Kong'. He was named one of Hong Kong’s Top 10 CFOs by CEO Insights and Sa Sa International has won multiple IR Magazine trophies over the years – most recently for best annual report (small cap) in 2021 - so he certainly knows his IR onions. Attention University and Business Studies Students Eyeing a Career in Finance or Investment Banking! Through my work at my financial literacy charity City Pay it Forward, I have mentored a large number of students pursuing careers in finance. ?One particularly effective strategy that consistently helps candidates excel in investment banking interviews is the creation of a mock investment portfolio. It is cost-free and an excellent way to develop a keen understanding of the markets, linking everyday economic activities to financial trends. It also shows potential employers that you are a self-starter with drive, qualities they seek but find difficult to quantify. ? Here is a simple way to begin: 1.?????Choose a Platform:?Use any online stock market simulator. I recommend MarketWatch by the Wall Street Journal (https://bit.ly/4ckqIMN), which offers a variety of simulation options. ? 2.?????Set Up Your Game: - Duration:?60-90 days - Amount:?Mock $10,000 (any amount really) - Portfolio Construction:?Pick five stocks: -- Two well-known brands (think about logos that you know) -- Two that are new to you, requiring research -- One chosen for its commitment to environmental sustainability Dive Deep: Invest time in comprehensively analyzing your chosen stocks, considering factors like risk, diversification, growth potential, and market competition. Steer clear of the temptation to follow "hot" stocks without performing thorough due diligence. ? Stay Informed:?Keep track of news, current events and trends affecting your stocks. If a stock experiences significant movement, investigate the catalysts behind these changes. ? Now, when you are in that interview seat and the question comes up, “What is something interesting you have done recently?” you will have a compelling, informed response that showcases your proactive and hands-on approach to learning. ? This strategy not only prepares you for interviews but genuinely enhances your understanding of how financial markets operate. You will stand out not just for what you know, but for your initiative and depth of insight. ? What do you think? Could this approach help you in your next job interview? Drop your thoughts or questions below! #CareerInFinance #InvestmentBanking #FinanceStudents #CareerAdvice #MockPortfolio #InvestmentStrategies #FinancialMarkets #InterviewPrep #CareerDevelopment #FinanceCareer #InterviewTips #FinancialPlanning #InvestmentTips #CareerSuccess #StudentAdvice #FinanceInternships #CareerOpportunities
