An update from Jay - one of our students in the HPI Maker Universe Jay, is adept in various technologies like 3D modeling, printing, electronics, and woodworking. But my attempts to involve Jay more formally through employment or workshops were declined. Jay isn't unwilling to share knowledge; in fact, Jay and other makers help other students whenever they can. Yet, there seems to be a distinct discomfort among makers with committing to scheduled work. Paul Graham highlights this notion in the clash between a manager's and a maker's schedule. Managers' days are broken up by meetings, often planned by others. Makers, however, work through long, uninterrupted time periods: https://lnkd.in/gy8wDFrC Jay intuitively knows that meetings would disrupt any creative flow. This understanding aligns with managers who realize that their that squeezed-in "focus work" does not result in creative outcomes. The Chemical and Materials Engineering department hosted its second edition of the 3D printing workshop for undergrad students, facilitated by Dr. Beth Sterling Lee. Kazoos and slinkies were some of the fun and creative approaches to guide participants in refining skills such as computer-aided 3D modeling and troubleshooting.? The event was accompanied by talks from Dr. David Nobes, providing an introductory session on SolidWorks, and Dr. Roberto Monroy for our workshop seminar. Special thanks to the Engineering Elko Garage for providing training on their 3D printers and access to their facilities for our activities.
